criminal Justice Major Preferred!!!! PLEASE READ the description. PowerPoint presentation

In your Final Project, you will look at crimes in three categories: against property, against persons, and against public order. In a 2-4 slide presentation, respond to the following questions for the crime that you select: ARSON

1.       Define the elements of the crime, including the actus reus and mens rea for each crime. Make sure to cite a state criminal statute for each crime

2.       Identify whether the crime can be classified as a crime against property, crime against person, or a crime against public order and why the crime is so classified; and

3.       Describe a factual scenario, either fictional or true in fact, in which the crime is committed. Should there be different penalties for crimes against property, people, and public order? Why? Do you believe that crimes in one category are more serious? Support your argument with examples as to why these crimes are similar or different.

You may use the Model Penal Code definitions as outlined in your text, or select specific statutes from the Federal or a state criminal code. However, make sure you clearly identify the elements as outlined in that statute. It is suggested that you separate your responses for each scenario with headings in your presentation.

Remember to answer each of the questions above for each of the scenarios you select and, when referring to your text or other sources, clearly cite your sources both on the slides in your presentation and on the reference slide.

In a PowerPoint, as with any other written assignment, I encourage using subheadings.  By subheadings, I mean taking the requirements of the assignment and using as mini titles throughout your presentation and then writing your responses to each beneath them.  Effectively, what you end up with is a great outline for the assignment and it will make preparing the PP much easier.  In a PowerPoint, the subheadings become the headings for either a slide or a series of slides.

You may want to write out your PP just as you would an essay and then put it in PP format.

Some suggestions for an effective PP presentation:

1.   Don’t cram each slide with information.  Consider using bullets and giving a synopsis of each point.  You can provide more information and a comprehensive explanation in your presenter notes for each slide.

2.   Remember to use in-text citations.  These can be placed on the slide or in the presenter notes.

3.   Plagiarism applies to PP’s.

4.   Don’t get too fancy.  First, you aren’t graded on how fancy your PP is – only on the content.  And secondly, if you have too many bells and whistles in it, you begin to take away from your message.  But that also doesn’t mean that it has to be plain.  Have fun with it, but don’t go crazy!

A few things to remember for this or any PowerPoint.  APA formatting for a PowerPoint is not exactly the same as for a paper.  For example, the rules concerning double spacing, 12 point font and 1 inch margins do NOT apply.  You do however need a title and reference slide and they do not count towards your slide count.

Now to fill in the meat:

Title Slide

This does not count towards your 9 to 15 slide total and it should include the course, assignment title, your name, and the date.

Crime 1 (ARSON)

Elements - This is the beginning of three groupings of elements, classification, and scenario.  The groupings will be people crimes, property crimes and public order crimes.  Pick one (such as people crimes) and chose an example of a crime that falls into this category (such as murder).  In this section you will cover the actus reus and mens rea for your chosen crime along with the elements of the crime.  To get the elements, pick a state or the federal murder statute and take them from there.   Make sure to cite a state of federal criminal statute you use for each crime.  I would also define “mens rea” and “actus reus” the first time I use each term (this only needs to be done once in the paper).

Classification of Crime - You may have already mentioned the classification of your crime (either a people, property, or public order crime), but please state it again in this section.   Again, this may seem obvious, but explain why this crime falls into this category: Murder is classified as a people crime because . . .

Scenario - This is where you can either get your creative juices flowing and make something up or find a true story that applies.  Just make sure to lay out the elements of the crime for whatever you write about.  In other words, if you find an article or make up a story about murder, make sure to tell me the elements of murder and how your scenario meets them.

Order of penalties - Answer the following questions:

Should there be different penalties for crimes against property, people, and public order? Why?

Do you believe that crimes in one category are more serious?

Support your argument with examples as to why these crimes are similar or different.

Reference Slide - This does not count towards your 9 to 15 slide total.
