Week 12 Discussion 11-A

Students will compose responses that address the discussion topics, and will include at least one scholarly* reference.  References and in-text citations are to be done in correct APA 6th edition style - please be sure to follow the correct format! Students are required to post an initial discussion as well as to reply to at least two classmates.  The word-count and other criteria is located in the discussion rubric.

Your prompt for this first discussion is as follows:

Now that you have read the articles in the module on The Strengths Perspective, Person-Centered & Humanist Approaches, and Systemic & Ecological Approaches, please respond to the following:

  1. Consider Saleebey's (1996) explanation of the strengths perspective.  In your view, what are the potential positive aspects of this approach?  What are the negative aspects (if any?)

  1. Why do you believe the strength perspective is said to underlie social work methods?

  1. How do the strengths perspective and humanistic approaches fit with one another, and do you believe they can be used simultaneously? Explain.

  1. Finally, think critically about the ecological systems theory; why would we say that this theory underlies social work?  Can you think of some historical examples where this approach may have been used? Can you provide a modern example?  Is there still value in this theory?

    • Please do not forget to include properly cited research in your initial response - initial responses are a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 750 words.

*note that a scholarly source is one that has been published in a journal or has been peer-reviewed; while at times, it is acceptable to use research from the internet, '.com' references should be avoided (.com stands for commerce - stick to .gov, .edu, .org).  The course readings, while they may be scholarly, do not count.  You must do research beyond the weekly expected reading - however, you can (and should) cite them along with other material
