Title: Exploring International Bill of Human Rights and its Implementation

Topics:

  1. Explain the emergence and importance of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by referring to its crucial role in enactment of human rights instruments, challenges including problems with jurisdiction and enforcement, changes it has incurred, and contemporary status.

  1. Discuss the emergence and importance of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Provide a detailed introduction to its main message (i.e. refer to some articles), intended objectives, political and economic orientation, and challenges.

  1. Explore the two Optional Protocols of the ICCPR. The First Optional Protocol (facilitating an individual complaints mechanism on violations of the Covenant) and The Second Optional Protocol (abolishing death penalty) have been key in further entrenching human rights of people around the world.

  1. Discuss the emergence and importance of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Provide a detailed introduction to its aspirations and the human rights it seeks to secure (i.e. refer to some articles), intended objectives, political and economic orientation, and challenges.

Notes: Explore your topic by evaluating and summarising your topic and by drawing on examples that either indicate a protection or violation of those rights. You are expected to succinctly cover as many salient points of your topic as possible.

    1. Introduce your topic by providing discursive, academic definitions and referring to specific articles of the relevant international human rights law.

    2. Illustrate the importance and historical and philosophical emergence of specific aspects of international human rights, using credible academic sources to support your arguments.

    3. Provide example/s to illustrate how human rights were either protected or abused (ie. you can choose only one example if you decide that you will provide an in-depth introduction to the example and only if you are convinced that it covers all conceivable aspects of the relevant human rights topic).
