CIVE 121 1 Spring 201 7 Design Project Instructions Civil Engineering 121 – Spring 201 7 Due Sunday 4/16/201 7 at midnight You will find a drawing file of the “Pacific Wave Subdivision” in San Diego, CA, on Blackboard. Your engineering firm has been hired to draw a site plan for the individual construction site that corresponds to your group number. Directions : 1. Form groups o f 10 students each. Decide on a name for your “engineering firm.” Designate a group leader and he/she must e-mail me with the following information by Monday 4/ 3 at midnight :

 Your group name  First and last names of all students in group in alphabetical order by last name 2. Divide tasks equally between all team members, as everyone in the group will receive the same grade. You may use the engineering design steps as a guideline to delegate responsibilities but also ensure that the AutoCAD drawing tasks are distributed. 3. Your team will create a Powerpoint pres entation that must include (at least 2) AutoCAD drawings of the project. You must cover all steps of the engineering design process (each group member should present one step) . a. Needs Assessment b. Problem Definition c. Background Research d. Design Criteria e. Design Constraints f. Alternative Solutions (minimum 2) g. Analysis h. Evaluation and Selection i. Specification j. Communication 4. Guidelines for Powerpoint presentations :  All groups must submit their Power point presentations via Blackboard by Sunday, 4/16/2017 at midnight. The group leader will be responsible for uploading the file.  Presentations will be no longer than 7 minutes .  Groups will be called upon at random to give their presentations during lecture times on 4/17, 4/19, 4/24, 4/26, 5/1, and 5/3.  Any group member who is not present when their group is ca lled to give their presentation will receive a grade of “0” on the design project (5% of overall class grade) . Design Project CIVE 121 2 Spring 201 7 Design Project Instructions Project : You will design the floor plan for a single family dwelling (house) that meets your client’s specifications, to be built on the construction site corresponding to your group number . You can be creative in imagining your fictitious clients’ wish list . You w ill develop at least two different design s (alternative solutions) based on your client’s budget, design criteria, and constraints. Your house design must include at minimum : 1. Kitchen 2. Bathroom(s) (number specified by client ) 3. Bedroom(s) (number specified by client ) 4. Two or more of the following: living room, family room, den, dining room , laundry room 5. One or more of the fol lowing: bay window, fireplace 6. Outdoor additions (one or more of the following): swimming pool, hot tub , built -in bbq, porch , deck, pavi lion , play structure 7. Garage 8. Square footage range specified by client (e.g. – 2500 to 3000 sq. ft.). Make sure it will fit on the lot! Once your final design has been selected , you will create a site plan for the structure on the lot . Your site plan must include: 1. Property lines with dimensions. 2. Exterior dimensions of proposed building, including any architectural projections. 3. Proposed driveway, sidewalk, patio, walkways, etc. with dimensions. 4. Location of outdoor additions . 5. Setbacks of the structure from the property lines. 6. Address of the construction site (you will make this up based on your lot ). 7. North Arrow. Terminology : Property line – The legal boundary of a parcel of land. Setback – The distance from the property line to any structure on the site. Setbacks guarantee that sufficient sunlight will reach the street and adjacent buildings. The required setback is governed by local municipal zoning codes.  You may use editing tools (trim, erase, move , etc. ) to isolate your particular construction site from the subdivision drawing.  Be creative! There is no “right” answer. This project is about working with a team and going through the steps of the design process.  It is a good idea to use layers for the various compone nts of your design and turn them on and off as necessary.  Be sur e that everything in your design is sufficiently labeled.  AutoCAD has a built -in b lock library that you may want to use to enhance your design. You can access the DesignCenter by typing the command “ADCENTER” at the command line.  In the Folder list, click on the “+” sign next to the following folders to expand the directory tree: Program Files → Autodesk → AutoCAD 2017 → Sample → en -us → DesignCenter  You may find useful blocks in the Home, House Designer, Kitchens, and Landscaping folders.  You will find th e North arrow , which you must include on your site plan, in the Landscaping folder.  Be sure to use the Grading Rubric as a guide to make sure your project meets all requirements.
