Developmentally Appropriate Practice-Curriculum Choices

The curriculum that we use in a classroom is very important. Curriculum choices gives us the opportunity to mold our lesson plan around our specific classroom and set of children. “Teachers choose curriculum experiences that reflect children's current interests or that will likely be of interest to them” (Krogh & Groark, 2013). One example of what we may choose for our curriculum is weather. Here in Oklahoma the weather can change in an instant. Lately we have been having earthquakes and the children have been asking why our ground shakes. By using these observations, we can implement weather into our lesson. We could talk about the weather, tornadoes, earthquakes, thunderstorms and so forth. “According to the Standards, ‘Well-prepared early childhood degree candidates base their practice on sound knowledge and understanding of young children's characteristics and needs’" (NAEYC, 2009, p. 11, emphasis original). Every child can be considered when setting up this lesson plan. If a child needs to improve on reading then maybe he or she can read a book out loud about the earthquakes, we can work on a fine motor skills by creating art or building something about the weather, and etc. As we set forth and put this lesson plan in motion we would integrate social and emotional skills, physical skills, and cognitive skills into the curriculum. This way all the domains are covered and every child is used in this process.
