Introduction
Cultivating students who are engaged, interactive and who are truly invested in their
learning is a challenge that we as educators are tasked. Students who learn by participating in
active learning techniques retain knowledge longer. This paper strives to offer an example of
how music and simulation can improve the physician assistant student’s recognition and
retention of heart sounds. In particular it will highlight a musical in classroom activity,
“Drum’N Rhythm”. “Drum’N Rhythm” is a faculty led exercise in which heart sounds are
mimicked through percussion on a snare drum following a verbal discussion of how each sound
presents. After the musical component, student’s learning is further reinforced through a Harvey
Heart sounds simulation-learning lab. This activity allows physician assistant students to develop
their physical exam and diagnostic skills in a fun and interactive environment.
