THIS IS ONLY FOR KIM WOODS please follow allinstructions treat each answer to question or to a discussion as a separetly work and nees a separetly citations and references

Expectations for Class Discussions and assignments:

In regards to discussion posts I generally follow the guidelines spelled out in Walden's grading rubric in regards to posts (see the grading rubric outlined in the course information section of blackboard). However, if you do not use APA format or references in at least your initial post, I will deduct at least 5 points for that (so please do that).  This is also the same rules for assignments, that they must follow APA style format. Also, in past courses I have been flexible in certain situations regarding delayed or late posts. I do believe that life sometimes gets in the way when we least expect it to. Please know that I would prefer a late post than no post at all.  However, I will not accept posts that are more than a week late.  If you are not able to post by the required date for whatever reason, just please let me know beforehand. As a rule, however, I do deduct points off the posts if they are late so as to be fair to those who post on time.

In addition, I will be following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or to many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).

I have provided an outline of what is specifically required for discussion posts and written assignments in this course:

Discussion Posts:

All posts to all discussions require APA citations and references. Each student is to respond to 2 other students’ posts for every discussion throughout the course.  This is the rule for this class; there are discrepancies in this on the Blackboard site. However, going forward,  If you post more than 6 response posts by day 5 you will be eligible for 3 points extra participation credit to make up for any lost points (my class rule).

I will be posting on discussions and I am requiring a response from you so please check throughout the week for when respond to your discussion post (usually by day 5)

All initial posts and response posts are due on the days specified on Blackboard (usually Day Three and Five).  If your post is late for whatever reason please make sure your posts are posted by Day 7.  I am no longer allowed to accept posts after Day 7 as per Walden’s Policy, and any posts. If you know that there is a circumstance that will prevent you for making the post on time or by Day 7, please email me to discuss.

The way a reader (myself and other students) can see that you understand the information, theoretical models, concepts, and words you are discussing is to write about them in your own words as much as possible, tell us what the article authors said by paraphrasing, using your own language. Scholarly does not mean you have to write using multi-syllabic words. Writing a bit like you talk is fine if the reader can understand and if your spelling and grammar are correct.

Read the rubric before and while you write. Let it guide you as to what you write. This is straightforward. In discussion posts you can draft a post in a word document where you have pasted the instructions for each point to be made in the post. You can then write your answer/post right under this instruction and copy and paste the whole thing onto the discussion list. This can help you stay on track.

The idea in discussions is to have as much of a conversation as possible. Notice that the “feedback” rubric score for “excellent” says: RESPONSES  --if you fail to respond at all, the grade for feedback is 0 out of 10 points.  This does not even consider quality of posts, doing nothing causes a loss of 10 points

CITATIONS AND REFERENCES:  Initial posts and the 2 required responses must have citations and references from the professional literature.  Using only the case as a reference/cite is NOT sufficient.  This is a vignette, it is not research that will back up a claim.  Every post should have a claim you are making  (e.g. "I think an eco map is good to use here",  "Strengths based is best here", "Women in violent relationships often attempt to leave 9 times before leaving for good).  You then must have a cite/ref. that backs up this claim, e.g. an article that states eco maps are good to use in situations similar to the case under discussion.

Written Assignments:

Walden University has a strict policy on written assignments, whereas all papers are required to follow APA format.  The only exception is that they no longer require a running head on the papers.  Most of you already adhere to this format and I have not been as strict in my grading when reviewing your papers on this, but going forward (Week 7 and beyond) I will now follow closely to Walden University requirements and the rubric.  The outline for an APA paper is below, and I have attached a sample for your review.

In addition, as I mentioned in my introductory post at the beginning of the quarter. following very closely with Walden's Tunitin Policy, which I posted below. Therefore, any paper that is submitted to me with more than 30% of the paper with improperly cited passages (or too many cited passages) I will return the paper to you and ask for you to re-review it and for a re-write if necessary. You will not lose points if the original paper was submitted on-time, but will be given a limited period of time to review/rewrite the paper (2-3 days).

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

APA Format Outline:  In general, your paper should follow these formatting guidelines:

Margin. Although formerly, the required measurement for margins is 1 ½ inch, now, it is required that margins on all sides (top, bottom, left, right) should each just measure one (1) inch.

Font Size and Type. Font for text all throughout the paper should be 12-pt., Times New Roman.

Spacing. Double-space for the whole document, including appendices, footnotes, tables and figures. For spacing after punctuation, space once after commas, colons and semicolons within sentences and space twice after punctuation marks that end sentences.

Text Alignment and Indentation. Alignment should be flush left, or aligned to the left creating uneven right margin.

Active Voice. Traditionally, the APA writing format requires writing in an impersonal form. That is, refraining from using pronouns such as ‘I' or ‘We' in your statements. Now, it has changed. Most disciplines require the active voice. An example of this would be, instead of writing “according to the study,” it should be “according to our study.” This way, papers are made to be as active as possible.

Order of Pages and Pagination. The order of pages should follow this format:

Title Page > Abstract > Body > References > Appendices > Footnotes > Tables > Figures

The page number should appear one inch from the right corner of the paper on the first line of each page. The title page will serve as the Page 1 of your paper.

Title Page

The Title Page should contain the title of your paper, your name as its author (including co-authors), your institutional affiliation/s and author note if applicable. In case there's no institutional affiliation, just indicate your city and state or your city and country instead.

As mentioned earlier, your title page will serve as your Page 1. It should be typed centered on the page. If it requires more than one line, please be reminded to double-space between all lines. Your name appears double-spaced as well, below the paper title.

The author note is where information about the author's departmental affiliation is stated, or acknowledgements of assistance or financial support are made, as well as the mailing address for future correspondence.

Abstract

The Abstract of your paper contains a brief summary of the entirety of your research paper. It usually consists of just 150-250 words, typed in block format. The Abstract begins on a new page, Page 2. All numbers in your Abstract should be typed as digits rather than words, except those that begin a sentence.

Body

The body of your research paper begins on a new page, Page 3. The whole text should be typed flush-left with each paragraph's first line indented 5-7 spaces from the left. Also, avoid hyphenating words at ends of line.

Text Citation and References

Text Citations are important to avoid issues of plagiarism. When documenting source materials, the author/s and date/s of the sources should be cited within the body of the paper. The main principle here is that, all ideas and words of others should be properly and formally acknowledged.

The Reference Section lists all the sources you've previously cited in the body of your research paper. It states the author/s of the source, the material's year of publication, the name or title of the source material, as well as its electronic retrieval information, if these were gathered from the Internet.

Appendices

The Appendix is where unpublished tests or other descriptions of complex equipment or stimulus materials are presented.

  1. How would you as a social worker work with these individuals who have a dual role?

Cheraldo:

Great post, and thank you for highlighting the point of cyber bullying as a new trend. Recent research has shown that a substantial number of children have been victimized by bullying and have bullied others in turn. In one recent study, about one third of the children who either bullied others or were bullied themselves were identified as bully-victims.  How would you as a social worker work with these individuals who have a dual role?

In my opinion, Bullying has always been an action of opportunity. That opportunity meaning it could be a stronger person vs. a weaker person or a group vs. the individual. Being a bully allows the will of someone to be imposed on another. A bully attempts to enforce their values or desires on someone else who believes things differently or is different in some way.

Morality development seems to occur during young adulthood according to Kohlberg. His theory involves six stages during three separate levels. In looking at Kohlberg’s post-conventional level; it appears to be where moral conscience is developed. Since during the earlier stages the young person’s sense of morality is controlled by external forces. This would include authority figures like teachers or parents. There are some critics such as Dunn and Hughes (2001) who believe that children who engage in violent imaginary play will develop a lower sense of morals.  Other critiques of Kohlberg state that he primarily dealt with males and did not include women in his formation of his theory.

In the past bullying was seen as a passage through youth to adulthood. There have even been movies based on this. “However, this view has changed, and schoolyard bullying is seen as a serious problem that warrants attention” (Campbell, 2005). The newest development is the cyber bully. These new bullies use the technology of today by being in chat rooms, sending hate emails, text messages or even making a website full of hate. Some websites have other students voting on “biggest geek” or “sluttiest girl in the school.”

The basic concepts have not changed in that the goal of the bully is to hurt another in aggressive ways intentionally. While in the past it involved fists, punches or spitting; these days it is now verbal assaults through texts, emails, websites, teasing, scapegoating or sarcasm in a public forum.

The changes of today’s bullies is the wide use of media to accomplish their goals. Technology has been incredible but until bullies are held accountable by some means the harm to others will continue.  References:

The program where I worked often had a serious problem with bullies. Most of the patients came from school systems where they were the bully or where bullied. We also had an equal share of girls to boys who both are bullies or are bullied.

A typical incident would involve the classroom setting. It could happen in the classroom or as the classes transitioned. The teacher would have handed out packets for the day that the students would work. Because of their lack of impulse control, one student would either loudly or even in low tones comment on another’s family, dress or lack of abilities in some area. The noise would upset the other student, who would make a statement back. The first student (Sam) would make more comments back to the second student (Dave). Dave would tell Sam to shut up. Sam would stand up from his desk and attempt to punch Dave in the head. Dave would try to protect himself. At this point, the teacher has called for our staff who would then come and restrain Sam.

Peers who watched these interactions have expressed fear and anger. New students have concerns for their safety as do the parents. They speak of not feeling staff will protect them and often cry at night.

Our text gives some suggestions that Dupper made in 2013. His nine steps are: “that school personnel can take to discourage and stop bullying” (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman 2016) include: 1) Assessing the nature of bullying 2) gathering support from staff 3) form a coordinating team 4) conduct in-service training 5) provide programs for victims and bullies 6) focus on shifting norms 7) establish a discipline policy 8) increase adult supervision  and 9) have prevention and intervention at transition times (grade to grade or class to class).

Social workers can play a significant role in being a part of in-service training or helping with programs for the victims. The role they plan could also extend to advocates for policy changes across the school board.

In the video Mr. Hernandez is not acknowledging his part in unsafely disciplining his children. He stated that they don’t hit their children and they get disciplined just like he and his wife when they were children (Laureate Education, 2013). As a child welfare specialist myself and have been in the same position as the social worker in the video, I would have an issue with this. I understand his frustration with missing work and not making extra overtime money to support the family, but they have to learn how to discipline their children safely. There are some resources the Hernandez family could use to help them in this situation.

The first thing I would do as their social worker would be to do a financial analysis. I would also ask Mrs. Hernandez if she worked. Depending on if they both work or are attending school, they may be able to get assistance with childcare (OKDHS, 2016). They may qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP allows for low-income families to receive benefits for food (OKDHS, 2016). I would need to know about their culture. Some cultures do not like to ask for help. Some cultures don’t like the wife to work, and some cultures pass on unsafe disciplinary methods. All these cultural attributes could have impact child welfare policy, and it us up to the social worker to show the client how certain cultural norms can make parenting kids unsafe.

Discussion 1 Week 7

Child welfare systems across the country serve some of the most vulnerable children, youths,

and families. These systems are designed to support families and to protect children from harm through an array of prevention and intervention services; in particular, they are designed to support children who have been or are at risk of abuse or neglect.

In the case of The Hernandez family, the parents grew up where harsh punishments were the norm for their culture, and they continued to carry those harsh punishments on their children (Education, 2013).

As a social worker, I will deal with families from different cultural backgrounds. It would be extremely important for me to understand the cultural background of the Hernandez family. I would work with the family in order to effectively intervene and advocate for policies that support their needs and making sure that their children are safe in the home. I would be involved with the planning and delivery of a variety of services for the entire family, such as family support, advocacy, parenting group, family therapy, as well as child protection. My task would be, to understand a variety of factors related to the child, the family, and the community and to balance the child’s safety and well-being with the rights and needs of the family that may be in need of help.

A family preservationist in child welfare is a social worker whose main goal is to implement an in home safety plan to prevent the children from entering into the foster care system. The family is given and intervention plan to keep their kids safe within their living environment (Hayward, & Cameron, 2002). When it comes to the foster care system and whether or not it is harmful for children, I find it to be harmful. I have been a permanency worker and I’m currently a foster care and adoptions worker. When children come into custody it is the child welfare specialist’s job to make sure the parents of the children get the support and resources they need to safely parent their children so they can reunify with them. This has to be proven to the courts through reasonable efforts. The children have already been traumatized at home. Then they are ripped away from their parents which causes more trauma. Now here comes the parental visits and the child is reintroduced to the trauma. All this disturbs children mentally and psychologically. Often times the children have to attend cognitive behavioral and trauma focused therapy just to deal with being involved with the trauma they faced at home and now the trauma caused by being involved with child welfare. Research shows that children who are in the foster care system are exposed to more health care risks, (Köhler, Emmelin, Hjern, & Rosvall, 2015). There are many dilemmas in child welfare.

There are two main dilemmas in child welfare that I have come across from working directly in child welfare: One, no child deserves to dangle in the foster care system until their parents can get it together to reunify with them; Two, no child deserves to return home when the safety of their return is in question. I prefer permanency over family preservation. Every child deserves to have a safe and stable home. At the end of the day this is what is important. I do believe parents should be given all the help possible to preserve the family. All children deserve to be with their family, but this isn’t always what is best for them. There are benefits and disadvantages to both family preservation and permanency.

According to Hayward and Cameron the three benefits of family preservation are: “rapid response, intensive services, and short-term involvement” (Hayward, & Cameron, 2002, p. 342). One of the disadvantages of the family preservation program is those parents who have severe substance abuse issues, mental health issues or other sever issues may not be able to cooperate with the program (Hayward, & Cameron, 2002). This is also a disadvantage of permanency. For children who parents are not able to safely parent them, they are kept into the foster care system with hopes of being adopted. Another disadvantage of permanency is the high cost of placing children in out of home care. An advantage of permanency is that for those children who can’t safely return home, they have the chance of finding a safe and stable home with a family who will love them as their own.

Discussion 2 week 7

Family preservation does not mean what critics say it means. The term "family preservation" has a very specific meaning. It refers to a systematic determination of those families in which children could remain in their homes or be returned home safely, and provision of the services needed to ensure that safety. Among those policies and procedures: The intervention begins when the family is in crisis. Which the intervention is designed for families whose children otherwise face imminent removal to foster care.

As a worker, I would spend time in the family's home, so that i can see the family in action and so the family doesn't have the added burden of going to my office. I would give the family my contact information should they need to reach me 24 hours a day. I would begin with the problems the family identifies, rather than patronizing the family and dismissing their concerns. As a worker I would be able to assist the family due to several different approaches to helping families, so they don't become hostile to those families if their first attempts to help don't work.

Foster care can be informal or arranged through the courts or a social service agency. The goal for a child is the foster care system is usually reunification with the birth family, but may be changed to adoption when the parents have not been compliant with their single case plan and the court orders.

Permanent foster care means an out of home placement in which there is a long-term contractual foster care agreement between the foster parents and the department that is approved by the juvenile court and in which the foster parents commit to raise a ward in substitute care or youth offender until the age of majority.

Permanency offers caseworkers a structured approach to moving children more quickly from the uncertainty of foster care to the stability and security of a permanent family. Historically, caseworkers have been taught to plan in a straight-line, sequential fashion: first to work diligently toward reunification with the biological family; and if after a year—or two or three—reunification looks unlikely, to then switch gears and start planning for adoption or another permanency option. Unfortunately, by this time, the parents have usually become alienated from their child and the case planning process, the child will probably have to be moved from the temporary foster home to a pre-adoptive home, and the child’s length of stay in foster care has been prolonged unnecessarily.
