Abstract

This assignment we will go over Ella’s understanding of math and how we can change to make her stronger in this subject. How a different lesson plan approaches can help children with special needs in the way to help her understanding. I have tried to develop a lesson plan that is as cohesive as Mrs. Hasselbar’s lesson plan but not completely different. I have taken so much from observing in the classroom and actually sitting down with a teacher, but what I have really learned is to be open to new ideas and how everyone learns differently and different approaches bring forth different outcomes.

Teaching for Exceptionalities

Ella is bright 5th grader who has lots of interest and has lots of strengths in the classroom like, reading, writing and she really loves to draw but as I continued to my observations and discussions with her teacher I have to find out what her struggles in school are and how they are trying to conquer those hurdles at school. I am glad I got to know how a classroom has acclimated to having multiple special needs students in the class

Understanding Strengths and Weaknesses Strengths

Ella has strengths in reading in the 3rd grade level and read full sentences in a book that she read to me was, “That’s What Friends are For” by: Florence Parry Heide and Sylvia Van Clief. She can had comprehension skills as she is able to tell me what happened in the story and remember the names of some of the characters. When it came to spelling and individual words she struggled to remember how they were spelled as they were just given to her in a worksheet and not in any other format. Ella is a very creative student and was able to draw out an example of what the words mean if they were put into a sentence for her which was really great to see her work with her teacher during group work that day. She is also very visual and kinesthetic not as much auditory as which was notice during her readings, as she seemed to drawn to books with more illustrations.

Weaknesses

Ella struggles in math as was apparent during morning class assignments. When it came so Subtraction with regrouping with three numbers and she struggled to remember what directions were given to her and word problems were also quite difficult as it hard for her to distinguish what parts of the problem that were needed to solve the equation.
