Thank you for your interest in this research project. This information is provided so that you can make an informed decision about participating.

What is the purpose of the project?

We want to identify and understand how solo parents perceive home ownership. This is so solo parents can be informed and enabled toward home ownership.

We undertook a process of inquiry to find out more about Stokes Valley. Our findings revealed solo parents make up 67.1% of the family household composition in Stokes Valley. Stokes Valley also has a home ownership percentage of 68% in either privately owned or held in Family Trusts. Statistics reveal a median income of $30,567 for Stokes Valley so, we were curious how solo parents, in particular, could enter the housing market. A house deposit for most banks is around 20 percent of the borrowing amount. With this in mind how would solo parents perceive home ownership? Is it obtainable?

From asking the question ‘How do solo parents in Stokes Valley perceive home ownership?’ we are interested to find out what enables and disables solo parents in Stokes Valley towards home ownership. This question opens opportunity to explore whether active policies and procedures around home ownership are accommodating for solo parents. Understanding the perception of solo parents in Stokes Valley informs us of their understanding and perspective of home ownership. It also raises another important question - what is informing solo parents of this understanding?
