Week 4 Discussion 1

What is your perspective on the ethics of providing universal health care to all U.S. citizens, and how well do you think the Affordable Care Act has addressed this cause?

My perspective on having a program that provides us with universal health care would be a great idea. As long as the cost was the same for everyone and that did not change based on what kind of program you decide to choose. For example one should not get to have a doctor on a list that designed just because of the income bracket, if we did not do so then we would be able to have access to other form of healthcare and not just what the restricted list has provided us with. There are a few pros cons that I have seen from this program. In this article I read it states this " A big part of the law states that if you do NOT have coverage, you will have to pay a fine, which has increased since last year. The fine is either a) 2.5% of your total income or b) fines for each member of your household ($695 /adult, $347.50/child) with no household limit. ObamacareUSA.org (2014-2017). For example if you do not have the health coverage for the year you can get fined, but for some people they say why do you not just pay? Maybe the cost of the prescriptions are too high or maybe there has been a family emergency like a death and that would put a big dent in a budget. Which when you think about it is not a very good approach which is why they should try a more of a deontology approach instead of thinking of it in more of terms of how will this benefit me and the taxes I am receiving from this situation. I do not think the affordable healthcare act has done much to understand this situation and therefore I think they should try to reconfigure the plan and rearrange somethings and then maybe help to make it ok for everyone. utilitarianism says that the "ends justify the means" so to speak which is not good it is kind of like I could not find another solution so this is what I came up with sort of attitude.
