AMIND

INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE AMIND 141 ASSIGNMENT

  1. Realize that the assignment is optional and is not extra credit. You will receive up to 60 points and if you elect to do the assignment you total possible points for the semester will increase by 60 points and you will, by turning in the paper, earn up to 60 points. If you earn a lower grade on this assignment than the grade you have at the time you turn in the assignment, your grade in the class could go down.

  2. I will be reasonably harsh on typographical errors, awful grammar, and incomplete or incoherent thought. You will lose points for these flaws.

  3. Plagiarism and copying from someone else work will be severely punished. I would expect that each paper will be significantly different.

  4. Each assignment must have a cover page that provides your name, the class section of Amind 141, the title of your paper, the date, and your red id number.

  5. Each assignment shall be 1.5 spacing of sentences, citations of your source must be provided in either MLA or Parenthetical format if you directly quote. There must be a Bibliography at the end of your paper providing the sources for your paper—use whatever format you choose but it must be consistent.

  6. The assignment must be at least 5 pages in length and no more than 10 not including the cover sheet or the Bibliography.

  7. The basic assignment for all classes is to compare the Indian policy (American Indians/Native Americans) of two past presidents---NOT President Trump. Please note that each of the three sections of 141 have a different president with which to compare policies.

  8. The assignment is due April 25th at the beginning of your class session. No late papers will be accepted for any reason.

Here is how the paper must be structured. Do not greatly deviate from this format—you will lose points.

First Page: A thesis statement. Tell me what you have concluded about the policies of the two presidents that you analyzed. This should be two or three paragraphs with the heading “Thesis Statement” For instance if I was comparing the policies of two presidents regarding energy I might say that my thesis is that x seems more environmental while y is more focused on extracting resources from the U.S. regardless of the environment. I might say that y want the U.S. to be more energy independent while x does not seem to care about that issue. I might say that my personal belief (and you should all have this in your thesis statement—and I expect personal statement to be different for each student to a large degree) is that y is a better policy and then give the reasons that I think that.

First Page: After the thesis statement begin with an Introduction. Have a heading that says “Introduction.” Then tell me what 2 presidents you are comparing, when were they president, what was their political party, and how you are going to compare them—in general using what sources?

Next Page: Begin the body of the report with a heading that says “Results.” This is the meat of the assignment. Tell me what the policies of the two presidents were/are and be as specific as you can. What laws did they pass or what legislation was passed during their regime? Did they meet with Indians? Had they had past experience in dealing with Indians? Did they seem to be pro or anti Indian? What issues did they deal with” Economic, Health, Education, Legal, etc. Who, if anyone, assisted them? How did the naitve people react to the policies? Did they continue a policy of a past president? In your research it will be vitally important for you to research and write about what Native American people said or wrote as well as the non-Indian sources.

Conclusion: The conclusion will be similar to your Thesis Statement but with much more detail and text. Sum up the paper for me here in a section with a heading that says “Conclusion.” In your conclusion you can begin with something like, “the policies of President Z and President Z were similar in some ways but very different in others.” As I have shown above ---------------------------------------. What do you think the long term results of your president’s might be? At the end of the Conclusion section I want you to tell me your personal thoughts about the policies of the two men who you studied. WARNING. This part of your paper should be different from that of your friends or classmate—you are all different people, with differing opinions and ways of thinking—make sure this section reflects you—not what you copied from someone else.
