Discussion

After reading “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema”, I was very moved by the culture of the Nacirema’s. When grew up my whole family was religious, however, I never really connected with my religion. As I got older and matured I started to understand why my culture and religion was so significant to my family. As I started learning about other religions it helped my understanding on why religion is so important to many people. While reading about the Nacirema, it reminded me of when I started maturing and learning about other religions. The Nacirema culture continues to widen my knowledge. This continues to make me understand why so many people are so passionate about their culture and religion. Even though I don’t believe what they practice, it still amazes me how all of them care so much for their religion and culture. While reading about the tribe, I applied cultural relativism because although the Nacirema tribe has an extreme way of practicing their religion, I had to refrain myself from forming a negative opinion. Instead, I understood their personal beliefs, activities, and culture. The first thought that came to my mind after reading about the Nacirema was that they are absolutely crazy, but then I realized that they were just very passionate about what they believed in. The objective I learned from this reading is the importance of ones culture and beliefs. Everyone should believe in what they want, and pursue the beliefs in whats important to their individual self. The reading helped me learn about myself and what I think is important in life and my culture. I also learned the significance of caring for my beliefs and respecting others beliefs as well. I think it doesn’t matter what other people around us believe in because we should only worry about what we think is right, as long it is harmless to others. The reading stated that, “Each day every member of the family, in succession, enters the shrine room, bows his head before the charm box, mingles different sorts of holy water in the font, and proceeds with a brief rite of ablution.” When I read this, it showed me how dedicated the Nacirema tribe was to their culture. Everyday they devote their lives to their culture and rituals, and put their culture and beliefs ahead of themselves.
