Persuasive Essay

The topic of my essay is Higher Education Necessary to obtain a management positions. To grab my audience's attention, I will reiterate that there are competitive positions and threats in globalization. Certain management positions do require a higher education degree with a unique set of skills. Human Resource Management demands special and technical skills to execute its requirements of a role. The thesis statement is that higher education is a necessity that cuts across some entities with managerial positions being among them. The reason will allow exposure to more opportunities for career growth and development, easier consideration for positions that require specialized and technical skills, and better one’s positioning to be competitive on the global labor market.

For some corporations, it is a mandatory requirement for higher education in order to obtain positions in industries that do not typically require one. What this means is that the requirements for assuming management positions are changing and only those with the right academic credentials will be able to reach this level of their career. However, some disagree that the need for higher education is unnecessary. Since employment data from the United States show that over 30 percent of individuals in managerial positions believe that universities and colleges are doing a fair to poor job in preparing candidates for responsibilities in the business world (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2012). Considering more often than not companies are placing a lesser value on advanced education, and then this position may be tenable. Despite which side one may believe in or belong, higher education may or may not be necessary for making people better managers, but one of the means for the country to respond to the threat of globalization and remain competitive. Placing greater emphasis on the possession of a four-year degree as part of the minimum requirements for employment makes it imperative to have a higher education.

The potential challenges I may face addressing an audience will be, first, the level of language used to present ideas. The level of language used should ensure that the targeted audience receives the intended message. However, this will be a challenge because my targeted audience entails persons with different levels of education. Arousing interest on the essence of higher education could present a challenge. Advising them that the decisions they make today will affect their tomorrow. Earning a graduate degree is not a guarantee that a person will get a job in management with an excellent salary. Although, such a position will provide them with long term job security. Convincing an audience with different perspectives on education along with life circumstances about the importance higher education can possibly present challenges as many of them have witnessed individuals getting a degree and remaining unemployed with nothing to show for it but high student loan debt and dead end jobs. However, the same audience has seen people without education doing well for themselves and their families.

The primary goal is to prove the importance of higher education in a career, in addition to, ensuring that a country is competitive as well as capable of addressing threats of globalization. Another goal of this essay will be to convince the audience on possible hardships of having basic minimum education without higher education.  For this essay to be successful in addressing the two goals, the essay must present clear, precise ideas that argue on the importance of higher education on a career. Another requirement is the need for the essay to understand the audience. The comprehension of the audience will be crucial in ensuring that the language of the essay reflects the targeted audience.

Higher education is the purpose of this essay to assist aspiring and current professionals with information on the type of investment required to accomplish their career goals. Also, the importance of higher education is visible in its ability to provide insights into the economic direction of the nation through job data and demand for higher education. A further reason why the information for this essay is valuable is that the need for higher education is not limited to corporate management jobs. In some instances, blue-collar jobs require a post-secondary education to get opportunities in their particular occupation. Some male technicians, mechanics, and foreman require at least an associate degree to earn enough income to provide the extra-curricular activities that complement the education of individuals.

There are many sides and opinions as to why some people in society believe higher education is or is not necessary for career advancement will be able to reach this level of their career. Despite which side one may believe in or belong, higher education is not only necessary for making people better managers but one of the means for the country to respond to the threat of globalization and remain competitive. Blue-collar and service oriented jobs do not require higher education to advance in the workplace. Placing greater emphasis on the possession of a four-year degree as part of the minimum requirements for employment makes it imperative to have a higher education. This topic is an interest of because some have often wondered if is it necessary to earn a higher education degree.  I know individuals that have done well both with and without higher education and able to do well for themselves in obtaining management careers.

The key points of the argument acknowledge the role of higher education in career growth and development will be supported by views presented from the sources given. They will show that for some higher education can be beneficial in some cases. In other cases, others, can prosper in their career without a higher education degree. Each scenario will be different depending on an individual’s circumstance. The understanding that college may not be for everyone, but can a level of success can still be achieved?

The main point will be that higher education could potentially expose individuals to career growth and development. The source supporting this position will be essential in supporting the work. The point from the source states that people who pursue higher education are usually more successful in their career and financially stable will further confirm the point (McMahon, 2009). The second point in the essay will be that the higher education opens a person up to positions requiring specialized and technical skills. The evidence to support this point will be that many managers have obtained technical, managerial posts in companies after undertaking higher education as advanced and scholarly source by Hansen, K. (2003). A College Education Is a Necessity in Today’s World, In W. Dudley (Ed), Teen Decisions. Education and College. San Diego: Greenhaven Press. The evidence will show that the undertaking of higher education for most managers enables them to occupy technical departments, therefore, boosting their position at work. The argument that experience is more valuable in certain professions than higher education is becoming weak as employment trends, and enrollment figures for advanced degree programs for these occupations show a different pattern. There are instances when a quality administrative job requires a graduate degree. Therefore, making higher education in career development is a significant quality to obtain any position in a management. The third key point is that higher education positions a person to be more competitive on the global labor market. The supportive argument for this point will be the enhanced abilities of highly trained personnel to deal with diverse challenges in an evolving world. The evidence shown will serve to support the idea and show the unique abilities of such personnel to deal this challenges.

The counterargument I will respond to is that management positions only require human resource management skills and do not need the enhanced education.  My response will be that earning a graduate degree is not a guarantee that a person will get a job in management with an excellent salary. Although, such a position will provide them with job security.

The main points I make in the essay are that higher education has the potential to enhance career growth enables individuals to be employed in technical positions, and be competitive in the labor market.  The key points support the main argument through highlighting the benefits that possibly attribute to higher education. Higher education is a necessity that cuts across some entities with managerial positions being among them. One becomes exposed to more opportunities for career growth and development, easier consideration for positions that require specialized and technical skills, and better one’s positioning to competing favorably on a global level. The desire for career growth in most of the industries today is essential in society today. An individual within any organization should have skills such as technical skills, a high level of critical thinking, and people skills to manage others. Regardless of the stated points the average worker needs more than the qualifications he or she has obtained to compete favorably. The importance of higher education is essential in obtaining a management position for blue-collar and white-collar jobs.
