Close Relationship with the Photographer and the Subject For this blogpost, I wanted to dedicate a lot of portion in researching the relationship between the photographer and its subjects. Since I had to do 3 portraits of my friends for assignment 2 (well I could do with strangers but I did not feel comfortable about it), I wanted to study what kind of effects it can bring when a photographer and its subjects are close in real life. Kate Moss by Corinne Day Corinne Day is a British photographer kno wn for her portraits of Kate Moss. Corinne Day and Kate Moss were one of the hottest pair of friends I should say, in 1990s in England. Thanks to their close relationship, portraits of Kate give intimate and candid effects. Kate Moss’s facial expressions are very natural whenever she comes into her friend Day’s angle. Toyokazu Nagano Toyokazu Nagano is a Japanese photographer. He is well known for taking adorable photos of his youngest daughter Kanna chan. Kanna was 4 years old when this series called My Daughter Kanna was taken. The most charming element in his photography is this baby Kanna’s natural joy. This was possible because Kanna was photographed by his father. The angle, composition, and colour palette are very clean and static. Kanna is always in the centre and the entire series has been taken at the exact same location. So Kanna’s happiness will be the first thing that catches the audiences’ eyes. (Well he added some cute props next to her, too) I wish I had a dad like Mr. Nagano. Colour Palette William Eggleston Do I even need to mention how much I like his colour palette? I mean, he is the celebrated colour person. To convey poetically how I feel about his work, I would say “his phot ography is e veryday -us in late summer afternoon when the sun gives us a goodbye kiss before it goes down.” Just look at this composition of turquoise green restaurant chair with grey hair and her baby pink checker dress. WOW. Some other favourit es… Wolfgang Tillmans Wolfgang Tillmans is a German fine art photographer. He is widely known for his still- life photography, but I found his fashion photography very pleasingly relaxing.

Tillmans photographed his friends. Again, I love when photographers take photos of their close friends, the outcome is so natural and casual. I love it. Lutz and Alex Sitting in the Trees (on the left) His aesthetics is so casual that I feel like he is introducing me to good old friends of his.

Nothing seem s set up and everything is frank. Brantley Gutierrez Brantley Gutierrez is a LA/NY based director/photographer. I discovered him when I was stalking an American actress Emma Stone’ s performances (Oh yeah I watched Lala Land of course). She starred in a short musical film by Will Butler called “Anna”. Brantley Gutierrez directed this film and I fell in love with the mise en scéne. In this short film, Gutierrez sticked to this Wes Anderson styled neat, symmetrical composition. The props were fully prepared, back up dancers’ choreography was clean. The colour palette of this film was pretty dramatic. It reminded me of a live jazz bar where Ron proposes to Mia in the movie “The Notebook”. I am definitely going to add some dramatic elements in my assignment.
