Teams

The main team I got to work with was a hotel and catering personnel. The team is made up of different personalities, although constant shift allocations means that they individually get to complete a number of tasks. There are no obvious limitations to the team; all members are actively involved in performing their tasks. However, there is no commitment to the organization. The team performs its duties on a day to day basis without the conception of the overall goal. It is possible for the organization to engage the team in order to motivate them in attaining the overarching objectives.

Team Performance

The team collectively performed ordinarily. Every member appeared to be aware of their assigned, and duly performed them as required. As a team, there are areas that can be improved. Every individual appeared to be working on their own and detached from the team as a whole. It is important to spur a team spirit that can be used to further the objectives of the organization whilst allowing the team members to learn and benefit from one another. It is also important for there to be team targets aimed at building individual skills and knowledge for the benefit of the team as a whole.

Keeping Team Members Focused

In order to keep the members of the team focused on their tasks, a number of steps were taken. One of the initial efforts was to ensure that expectations of the teams were made clear. This was done to eliminate any inconveniences, and in turn allow the team to focus on their tasks. Another closely related step taken to keep the team focused was that members were only assigned tasks they were competent at. Further, the team was afforded freedom and empowerment to feel in charge of their work. This motivated the team, and allowed them to contribute to the organization as a whole.

A lot of efforts were taken to ensure that the team understood the group mechanisms and process. The team was introduced to the stages of group development as it was deemed impossible for either of them to develop on their own. This required the development of interpersonal skills within the team. One other area that was deemed to be important in keeping the team members focused on their tasks was on creative innovations. There was an appreciation of the fact that there were emerging issues that could not be planned in advance. It was hence important to impart knowledge that would allow the team to overcome such emerging issues.

Integrating Suggestions from Group Members

The individual members of the group are key to the success of the group as a whole. Their individual contributions are essential to the attainment of the set objectives. Importantly, their suggestions were one of the key means of contribution for the group. Adequate measures were made to ensure that these suggestions were considered.

One of the ways that this was achieved was through the use of common goals. This allowed all team members to have a clear understanding, and support for each other. Such clarity paved way for suggestions that would encompass all activities taken by the team. Having common goals also allowed for clear roles and responsibilities within the team. As a result, the team members could contribute in these roles and have such contributions communicated to other members.

The management also offered a lot of support to the team, particularly in having their concerns taken into account. The team members frequently presented suggestions to the management, and these were taken into account where it was necessary. The reassurance provided by the management inspired the team in performing its tasks and responsibilities. The role of the management was restricted to the tasks that the team did not have the mandate to execute.

Meeting Diversity and Ethical Standards

The organization complies with the federal Equal Employment Laws that prohibit any form of discrimination. This has been one of the ways the organization has met the criteria for diversity and ethical standards. The Equal Employment Laws are embedded in the constitution. They require that there should be no discrimination at the workplace on the basis of gender, race, religious affiliations, or sexual orientation. This allows for a diverse workplace, and meets respectable ethical standards.

To ensure that such standards were met, the management tackled any issues that arose relating to diversity and ethics. This was a role assigned to the management, and that required an open door policy to encourage the participation of the employees in enforcing high standards. The open door policy is one where the top management allows subordinate employees to easily approach top levels of management to address important issues. It is relevant to point out that such subordinate employees have firsthand experience of the undertakings of the workplace. Adopting an open door policy allows the top management to deal with any concerns and issues happening within the workplace.
