2 Discussions & Final Project (DUE 5/4)

Learning Outcomes
This week students will:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to devise a plan to teach and assess a fundamental motor skill.

  2. Compare and contrast the benefits of organized sports and unstructured play.

  3. Evaluate the advantages of a national association which promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity.

Introduction

You will end the course this week by looking at two specific issues.  First, you will compare and contrast organized sports and unstructured play by considering inclusive practices and a home/school connection.  Then you will evaluate national associations and programs that promote healthy lifestyles.  This week, you will also explore the role of class management in maximizing time for practice and learning. Chapter 11 focuses specifically on the ways that physical educators deal with time, equipment, and space. These areas of teaching physical education are significantly different from the dynamics of teaching in an enclosed classroom. The idea of using stations as both a learning and management tool is reviewed. Chapter 12 focuses on physical safety, and examines the issues you need to take into account, in both lesson planning and in lesson conduct, to ensure that children are free from harm in your lessons.  As a culminating activity you will create a lesson plan that encompasses aspects discussed throughout the entire course.
