Final Project

The Final Project for this course is a 10-15 page paper addressing an issue in criminal justice with both historical and contemporary importance. The Final Paper is due in Week 10, but you should review its requirements now because you will complete different components of the project in Weeks 2, 3, 6, and 7. For this Project, you will identify an existing criminal justice issue and consider how this issue has been addressed historically by the criminal justice and legal systems and how contemporary policies attempt to address the issue today.

Your Final Paper will consist of writing about the historical significance of the issue in criminal justice. Next, you will write about the contemporary attempts to resolve or address the issue and the policy implications the issue has had on the criminal and legal systems. Your paper should consist of the following:

  1. Historical information on the issue

  2. Contemporary attempts to address or resolve the issue

  3. Policy or legal implications

Structural Requirements:

  • Length of paper: Though this is subjective, there will likely be at least 10 pages, not including title page, charts/tables, appendices, references and outline.

  • Font and font size: Times New Roman 12-point font

  • Number of references: minimum of 15 peer-reviewed articles

  • APA formatting: 6th edition

Week 2 Project

Application: The Abstract

Note: This assignment is part of your Final Project.

Submit a 250-word abstract on your topic for your Final Paper. It should be from a historical perspective and related to a contemporary criminal justice issue. In the abstract explain the issue, explain the historical attempts to resolve or address the issue, and discuss briefly the how the issue is handled in the criminal justice system today. Include the components necessary for an abstract.


 

Week 3 Project

Application: Annotated Outline/Bibliography

Note: This assignment is part of your Final Project.

Being able to plan a path to success is a key ingredient of doctoral success. For this assignment, you will draft your detailed plans with an annotated outline and bibliography, which will inform your Final Paper.

You should identify the historical issue you are focusing on for your final paper. Then, begin gathering scholarly research articles about your selected Final Paper topic.

Assignment:

  • Identify a minimum of 8 peer-reviewed journal articles for this assignment, and provide annotated notes for each reference.

  • Create an outline of your paper. The outline should list the major and minor subheadings with a brief description of what will be covered in each section as well as an explanation of its relevance to the Final Paper’s objectives.

Week 6 Project

Application: Historical Issue in Criminal Justice

Note: This assignment is part of your Final Project.

Investigating issues is an important component of working in the U.S. criminal justice system. For this assignment, you identify the historical issue in criminal justice that you will address in the Final Paper.

In Week 3's Assignment, you created an annotated outline/bibliography with a minimum of 8 resources on the historical issue you are focusing on for your Final Paper. You should begin to incorporate those resources into this Assignment. As a reminder, you will need to include in your Final Paper a minimum of 15 peer-reviewed articles. You should continue your research in preparation for completing all components (Weeks 2, 3, 6, 7) of the 10-15 page Final Paper that is due in Week 10.

The assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Explain the historical issue in criminal justice that you identified in Week 2.

  • Explain historical data regarding the issue and explain laws or policies that historically addressed the issue.

Week 7 Project

Application: Contemporary Issue in Criminal Justice

Note: This assignment is part of your Final Project.

Investigating issues is an important component of working in the U.S. criminal justice system. For this assignment, you discuss the historical issue in the criminal justice system that you will address in the Final Paper.

As a reminder, you will need to include in your Final Project a minimum of 15 peer-reviewed articles. You should incorporate additional resources into this assignment and continue your research in preparation for completing all components (Weeks 2, 3, 6, 7) of the 10-15 page Final Paper that is due in Week 10.

The assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Explain the current state of the issue in criminal justice that you identified in Week 2.

  • Explain what the current data looks like.

  • Explain what the trends are for this issue.
