Extension Project for Art of Anne Cubberly Workshop

Assigned: Feb. 23, 2017

Due: Mar. 2, 2017

Puppetry is one of the oldest and most culturally-diverse art forms, encompassing a huge range of artistic possibilities. From Sesame Street and The Muppets to the hit Broadway shows Avenue Q, The Lion King and Hand to God, puppetry is also part of mainstream American culture. What makes the art of puppetry most compelling is its synthesis of both visual and performing arts. A puppet isn’t complete as a visual work of art. It needs to be animated, given life and character by the puppeteer.

For this week’s extension project, visit Anne Cubberly’s web-site: http://www.annecubberly.com. Browse through the photos and videos under the various headings.

For your project, you will make a life-size puppet inspired by one of Anne’s puppet designs. Your puppet doesn’t need to look exactly like Anne’s puppet or be made of the same materials. But let yourself be inspired by Anne’s commitment to using environmentally sustainable and repurposed materials.

Your puppet can be made out of a variety of materials: from old clothes to newspaper to cardboard to milk jugs to water bottles, to all of them mixed together. Your puppet must be at least as tall as you are and able to be manipulated in some way by you. It should also have some three-dimensional aspect to it (no “Flat Stanleys”).

Bring your puppet to class next week. Be prepared to tell us about your process in making it and to show us on Anne’s web-site which of her puppets you based your work on.

Have fun!
