1 Saint Leo University HUM110CL Giants of the Arts: Holding the Mirror up to Society and Ourselves Course Description: Giants of the Arts will define those artists who, through the test of time, have been recognized as true masters; whose works advanced their art form(s), who become a significant influence within their field(s), and who continue to influence contemporary artists today. Students will examine how these artists used the components of their art form(s), why these artists are considered “great ,” what their greatest contributions are to our society, and how these artists affect our artists today. Students will also consider the qualities of “masterful” creative endeavors and contemplate how the artists’ gifts to our world improve and deepen our lives. Identify some of the greatest artists in our world’s histor y, the art form(s) they worked with , and appreciate the value of their contribution to the visual and performing arts. b. Develop an understanding of why and how an artist created in a certain style. c. Define and evaluate what constitutes a “masterpiece” in the arts. d. Consider and evaluate how these geniuses of the arts world influence and shape the artists and output of today. e. Investigate and contemplate the core value of personal developm ent through their personal discovery of a particular work of art. f. Improve the ability to effectively express themselves through the written word. g. Demonstrate critical thinking skills. h. Gain an understanding of the elements and components of the art of sculpture, painting, music, and theatre. i. Demonstrate an appreciation for various forms of creative expression. j. Demonstrate an understanding of issues and events in terms of historical, political, and economic context, and how these developments are reflect ed in the arts. k. Demonstrate knowledge of diverse populations and differing belief systems, values, and norms through the study of their arts. l. Examine how cultural myths, morality, and other themes are expressed in the arts. Exam questions will be true / false, listing, multiple -choice, matching, short answer, and essay. Exam 1 will be administered during Module 4 , and Exam 2 will be administered during the Module 8 . Each exam is worth 20% of the total grade. QEP Assignment : Engaging in Art: Are You Talking to Me? Students must attend or view one of the following: a live concert (either musical or dance), play, art museum, a significant piece of sculpture, and, in 400 -800 words, respond to the following topics. (For students who cannot physically attend a live perfo rmance or tour an actual art museum they may discuss with their instructor about alternate arts encounters.) Your responses should use proper grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Any outside sources should be documented using MLA citation style.  Purpose —Clea rly identifies the three -fold purpose of this essay.  Perspective —Investigates other point(s) of view and the writer’s own assumptions.  Evidence — Supports purpose with relevant, sufficient evidence through investigative research.  Analysis —Analyzes the conseq uences and implications of reasoning.  Core Values — Addresses the core values of personal development, specifically, and demonstrates its relevance to this purpose.  Decision Making —States the various options of decision making and chooses a solution.
