1) A critical part of effective advocacy is using language effectively, since specific ways of wording/framing issues influence how we see the issue, and what options make sense or sound like nonsense. I’ve done a lot of reflection and work on how to effectively reframe education debates to better support DAP/Big-Picture Education.

Read the article “How to Re-Frame Educational Debates“, and post comments about which three ways of re-framing the debates might be useful to you in advocating for children and quality education.

2) Back in the early 2000s, when the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was passed and first implemented, teachers and researchers and everyone else seemed to be in shock and few people spoke out against NCLB. However, in recent years, teachers, parents, students, and administrators are increasingly speaking out against corporate-style, test-driven, cookie-cutter schooling. Here are a couple of blogs/websites where you can find people speaking out against these unwise and counterproductive policies:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/

http://www.livingindialogue.com/

http://dianeravitch.net/

www.susanohanian.org

Scroll around and read some posts at one or more of those sites. Then, post two separate posts about aspects of educational policy that you’d like to speak out about—one about something you’d like to advocate against, and one about something you’d like to advocate for. For each, state who you might share your ideas with, and how you’d frame your message effectively.
