The article has focused on relocation stress syndrome and has defined it as a diagnosis which is associated with symptoms such as confusion, anxiety, loneliness and hopelessness.it mostly affects the older adults after they relocate to a nursing home. It is thus a psychosocial or a physiological disturbance which results from the transfer of a person from one environment to another. The literature review has discussed the three phases of relocation which include, pre-institutionalization, transition, and post-institutionalization. The first step involves the selection of a care facility which is long-term and the planning for financial needs.it also includes decision making on what to do with the houses and the belongings which belong to the older adults. In the transition phase, the symptoms of the relocation stress syndrome appear. In the last phase, the long-term results are evident, in this stage, illness or healthy realignment occurs (Association, 2000).

The article further discusses the various reactions to relocation whereby it categorizes those who suffer relocation stress into two distinct categories. They include forceful resistors and resigned resistors. In most cases, the resigned resistors are usually women. The main effect of relocation stress is confusion hence there needs to be regular checkup before and after resettlement. Other effects include decreased health status and mortality. The main questions which the study’s aims to address are how the older adults experience when they move from their place of the resident to a long-term care facility. Whether relocation is perceived as stressful and whether the experience of resettlement differs for the older adults who transition to an assisted –living facility versus a nursing home (Association, 2000).

According to the findings, most of the participants found their transition to being a fair and easy one. However, they expressed sadness and acknowledges the loss. The responses did not reveal the evidence that most of the older adults who are located to long-term care facilities from their primary residents suffer stress syndrome. The clinical implications of the relocation stress syndrome have been discussed. Some of the disorders which are associated with the stress syndrome are the depressive and the adjustment disorders. Other existing characteristics of the relocation syndrome are anxiety, fear, loneliness, hopeless, indecisiveness, suspicion and suicidal thoughts (Chenitz, 1983).

The article wanted to find out if the older people are the ones who are mainly affected by the weekly syndrome but the findings were not able to achieve this. It hence relates to the topic of the week since it’s about elderly development. In most cases, the older people are the ones who are mostly affected by the relocation stress syndrome. When old people are not in a position to care for themselves, they are relocated to long-term healthcare facilities. According to my thinking, the syndrome should be diagnosed to the elderly with the greatest percentage since most of them feel disserted during their old age (Chenitz, 1983).
