Hello Everyone,

What struck me in particular this week was the New Negro Movement, which took place during the 1920s. The attitude and actions of African Americans was liberating as they found strength within their culture and decided enough was enough, they were ready to fight back. Shockingly, they did not set out for revenge or retaliation but made it clear that they would no longer give in willingly to racial discrimination by whites. After watching the video The twenties, I was moved by a testimony an African American told after witnessing the lynching of another negro. It explained how the Ku Klux Klan came in tens to lynch or torture one African American. He stressed they always came by tens, for just one man. It was hard to watch him retell the horror and even worse to imagine. With all of the good pleasures made available during throughout the 1920s, it is sad to think that immigrants, African Americans, and some women experienced more pain than pleasure.

I also found the Flappers to be interesting to read about because women who identified as such were breaking away from social norms, and more towards sexuality and feminism. They traded in their four and five layers of clothing for two, took a few inches off of their dresses and skirts, cut their hair to ear length, smoked cigarettes, and indulged in alcohol. Though it was frowned upon by traditional Americans, many people took pleasure in seeing such sights, as pageants arose, allowing woman to expose more than normal or expected.

I do not have any questions, but after reading the Final Project requirements, it seems to be very intensive and time consuming. So, I plan to fit in as much course work as possible throughout the next two weeks. I am confident in this week’s assignment but I am sure there is something I may have missed. Any feedback is appreciated.

Best

Krystal
