What primary source did you choose and what event does it focus on?

Hardenbergh, M. (1923, Aug. 12). Taking the hand off the cradle to catch devil fish: How modern woman is delving into the sacred precincts of male occupation and is now found in the role of bandit, judge, bricklayer, hunter, and race horse jokey . The Atlanta Constitution , 2-3. The event I focused on is the “Modern woman”.

Why was this event important, and how does it fit into the conflicts and changes of the 1920s?

During the era known as the “Roaring Twenties” women discovered an opportunity to break away from the traditional female roles and make names for their selves by becoming career-oriented women who pushed the boundaries of male-dominated society (Barnes & Bowles, 2014). Women started to become less conservative in the way they dressed with shorter clothing and exotic hair styles which in some ways helped with the confidence to peruse their goals. I decided to use Eleanor Roosevelt because she made many contributions to women’s suffrage and the reform of public employment services

What does your primary source tell you about the event? And what does it not tell you?

My primary source was very informative about the struggles and barriers that women had to endure and overcome to break away from the traditional roles that they were expected to play in society. It detailed the selflessness and willpower that the most influential women of that era possessed.

How does the event you chose relate to your Final Project topic?

The topic I chose for my final project is women and the impact they had from 1877 to present. The “Roaring Twenties” was a time where women seemed to flourish and had greater opportunities to influence social, political, and economic issues and reforms. Eleanor Roosevelt played a significant role as the First Lady because she was a supporter of woman’s suffrage and working conditions for the American working class.

The 1920s were a time of much prosperity for some groups in American Society until the Depression. How was your chosen group impacted by the Great Depression?

My chosen group was impacted by the Great Depression due to the lack of societal welfare support. Women suffered and were left behind when it came to the New Deal. They did not receive better wages, better working conditions, or, unemployment insurance. (Barnes & Bowles, 2015, Section 8.3).
