Assignment: Documentary Film Recommendation Blog Post 1) Read the A.O. Scott article. (URL linked here and in the unit folder.) Research film documentaries and read film reviews of documentaries from reputable, established sources. Educate yourself as to how films are written about and analyzed for general audiences like newspaper and website readers. 2) Watch fe ature -length documentary films and choose one that you’d like to recommend. 3) Write and post a three -paragraph response to the movie. Paragraph One: Start with a one -to-two sentence (but full) summary of the film that includes the title and director and year . With your next sentences, provide some further description of the film overall, and conclude this first paragraph with the reason it is being recommended. Paragraph Two : Discuss this film in more detail. Explain and describe its actual contents and plo t and information. But don’t stop there. What do you notice about the movie that makes it special, or interesting? Describe HOW the film achieves the effects that it achieves. With this paragraph, you should be explaining how the specific technical aspect s and styles of the film medium are used to relay information. Paragraph Three : Explain the qualities that make this a worthy film. If there are negative, or weak aspects, mention those, too. After reading this last paragraph, your reader will know that y ou are recommending the film, without you ever typing “I recommend this film because…” You should provide a mention of what the viewer will take away from the watching the film. ~NO PERSONAL PRONOUNS! NOTE ON CHOOSING THE FILM: Choose any film that you c an connect to the concept of technical communication. In fact , all film, by the nature of communicating message/narrative though the use of technology, can be said to involve technical communication. But try your best to keep the film’s content relevant to our subject matter. GRADING: You will be graded based on adherence to these guidelines, on the effectiveness of your writing, and on the overall level of effort you seemed to have put into the post. This may be online writing, but it can’t be lazy writi ng. There’s a three - paragraph structure; it doesn’t have to be long, but it has to be sharp. Also, feel free to load your post with links and video, that would be cool, but this is not required. ALL blog posts must include an ORIGINAL TITLE and your NAME in the title of the post.
