Case Study Scenarios Worksheet

Answer the following for the corresponding Case Study Scenario. Each scenario should be replied to in a total of 175 words.

Scenario 1: Staffing Management

Determine a recruitment method and sources would you use and explain your decision.

The recruitment method I would use for this case in an advertisement. This involves publishing description of the vacancies available and the candidate qualification required for the post. The advertisement is to be posted on the newspapers and social media sites like our Facebook and twitter pages. The jobs will also be posted on the job websites such as LinkedIn. The main reason for choosing this method is because I am sure it will reach different kinds of people with varied skills and techniques as the ones we require.

Assess what type of interview would work best when hiring someone in an entrepreneurial environment.

The best interview type, in this case, is a panel interview. In hiring process in an entrepreneurial environment, It is not a good idea to hire an entrepreneur it is best to hire a person with entrepreneurial capabilities. Use of panel interview means there are different people with different judgmental capabilities hence they can help identify which is the best person for the post. Again the panel helps eliminate the trouble of scheduling several rounds of interviews.

Determine whether or not you would use selection tests.

Selection test is the best way to go in this case. It is the best way that the organization can determine among the candidates who is capable. This test can help the panel to determine candidate qualification to do the work or his skills and experience in a case where the advertisement gave the qualifications.

Scenario 2: Training and Development

Choose training and/or development programs to implement in order to keep operations employees loyal to the organization.

Effective communication training programs will be very necessary to keep the employees loyal to the company. In a case where communication is effective, the conflicts among the employees are automatically sorted. Good communication help bridges the gap that may exist between the employees and their managers. In such case, therefore, the employees are free to air their views in the most appropriate ways. They hence feel involved in the company, and the sense of belonging to that organization is created. Ineffective communication, on the other hand, would lead to negative work relationship. This will form the bottom line for the employee's disloyalty and hence the company’s failure.

Evaluate the training methods you would use.

The training technique for this case would be interactive training. In this organization, some of the employees are more experienced than the others. They, therefore, have vast knowledge in handling different problems, for example, those involving communication and interactive skills. Putting these employees into groups enable them to borrow from one another. They learn one another and interpret each other’s behavior positively. Ones the employees understand one another then they can always interpret the information from colleagues the right way no matter how it has been put.

Scenario 3: Employee Relations

Assess the discipline steps to take. Determine how you would apply positive discipline.

The first step to take in disciplining Doe is an oral reprimand. This is the first time the issue has gotten into the ears of the manager, so a verbal warning is necessary. This should be given in such a way that it does not look like a personal attack. The next step is a written warning. In a case where Doe does not respond positively to the verbal warning then a written warning pointing out his behavior is given. The warning clearly indicates how he should change and what will happen if he does not change. In a case where the written document has not helped change the Doe, a final document is issued to him. This will indicate all the warnings he has been given and documented. John Doe should understand that he has been given a chance to meet the expected change in behavior or face termination of the contract. The next step is suspending him on probation basis. John will be suspended for a subsequent period of probation if he fails to change after the final document. The probation period will be that of full supervision. If he fails in the probation, then he is not capable of changing. He will, therefore, be issued with a termination letter.

Determine the just-cause standards you should verify before termination.

Before termination, we will verify whether John Doe had been adequately warned of his misconduct before this decision. All the documented warnings will be reviewed. Was there an investigation into the matter before this decision is made? Was the investigation fair and did it produce substantial evidence that Doe had no reasons for the absenteeism?

Scenario 4: Workplace Health and Safety

Assess the benefits of a wellness program.

Since the problem is the stress at work, a wellness program can help reduce this stress. Some of the benefits that will come with this program are described. Improved productivity. These programs relax the employee's minds. When they get back to work, they concentrate more hence enhancing the productivity. Employee satisfaction with the job. The report of 2012 by AFLAC indicated that employees who take part in company’s wellness program feel happy and satisfied with their work in the company. The wellness program that involves all members of the organization help builds community. The sense of being a community strengthens their relationship with the company hence enhancing the teamwork among them. The teamwork, in turn, improves the company’s performance.

Summarize the components you would include in the wellness program.

To create a successful wellness program, I will have to include the following components:

A culture of wellness must be promoted. In this case, the employee’s well-being will be considered, and the company leaders will also participate. Effective communication will be a major focus. The existence of the program will be well communicated to the employees with promotional materials that are attractively displayed at right reading level. Multiple components of different designs will be available. Those for managing stress, blood pressure, weight loss among other will be there. Employees’ awards will be available to motivate them to get involved.

Scenario 5: Labor Relations/Unionization

Describe the process employees need to take to unionize.

The first step of forming the union is to form a committee. This committee must represent all departments and all shifts. It must reflect ethnic, racial and gender diversity. The next step is to adopt issues program, this is done by the committee. This should indicate the union's demands. The committee then signs up the majority of the union cards. This implies asking the workers to join the union. The federal labor board is then petitioned to hold an election to elect a leader. The union then negotiates a contract with the employer. The contract contains the requirements of the members of the union.

Explain the rights of employees.

All employees have minimum rights provided by the government. They have the right to privacy. This applies to their personal possession, e.g., handbag, their telephone conversation and messages and the organization must respect this. They have the right to be free from discrimination and harassments of any type. No matter the background an employee comes from, the employer and fellow employees must not discriminate or harass him in any manner. The right to a safe workplace is also provided. The employee has the right to protest against working in a toxic or unfavorable condition. And also they have a right to fair wages for the work performed. It is against the labor laws to underpay employees. They can hence demonstrate for the same, and they have a right to.

Assess what an employer can legally do to prevent unionization.

One of the ways an employer can prevent the formation of the unions is by conducting employee satisfaction survey; listen to what the employees are thinking. In most cases, they would want to talk just listen. After listening and understanding them, the organization can form a strategy focused on the employee's satisfaction and well-being. This will render the existence of the unions unnecessary hence none will be formed.

Scenario 6: Motivation

Explain two motivational theories.

Hertzberg’s Two-Factor Theory According to this theory, two factors influence the motivation and satisfaction of an employee. These are motivator factors and the hygiene factors. The motivator factor simply relies on the factors that make an employee feel happy with his work, feeling recognized and his work progression. The hygiene factors consider the factors that result in dissatisfaction and lack of motivation of they are lacking. The presence of hygienic factors do not increase motivation and satisfaction but, their absence results in increased dissatisfaction. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

According to this theory, you must meet the individual’s basic need before you can motivate him to work. The hierarchy of needs includes physiological needs like food, shelter, and water, safety which include personal well-being and financial security, belonging. This is the necessity of family and relationship. Esteem is another aspect, the person needs to feel confident and respected and finally self-actualization. This is the desire by and individual to achieve what he can and become what he wants.

Determine which theory would work best in this scenario to help motivate employees.

The best theory for this case is Maslow’s hierarchy needs. Since the company is interested in keeping some of its top employees; their needs must be met first. The employees must be satisfied in all the aspects described by the theory. With this satisfaction, they will be able to increase their performance hence increased productivity.
