Minimum 100 - word initial response Peer#1 Minimum of 50 words Over a period of time here in the United States it has went from infectious to that of chronic disease's that has been the main cause of death. "The two leading causes of death in the United States in the 1900's were tuberculosis and influenza and by contrast the leading causes of death in the 1990's were heart disease, cancer, and stroke's." (Mc Leroy, 2012 , p.21). Health promotion has been going on for a long time and it seems that many people feel that health promotion just does not work. It is thought that the money that is and has been spent on that of health promotion should be spent on treating the sic k rather than preventing people from getting there. Before health promotion and disease prevention emerged, the focus of healthcare was geared more to wards short -term illnesses rather than long -term illnesses (Williams & Torrens, 2008). Many decades ago, before health promotion and disease prevention was implemented, there was only emphasis of healthcare protection put on certain cities that consisted o f travelers from across the eastern sea (Williams & Torrens, 2008). Chronic diseases and major illnesses took the lives of many Americans which eventually led to more involvement from the government in the healthcare system by implementing more advanced he althcare prevention. Since the eighteenth century not only has healthcare evolved all over the USA even amongst smaller cities and towns, but health promotion and disease prevention has also advanced all over our nation. It has surpassed the healthcare sys tem that was once only available for acute illnesses by putting more focus on the actual prevention of certain diseases and illnesses. Immunizations and specific tests and screenings are all a part of the health promotion and disease prevention which has p layed a major role in protecting our nation’s health (Williams & Torrens, 2008).
