You have been assigned to teach a class using gaming, in which 75% of the students are from a particular ethnic group (you decide the content area, class size, and ethnic group). Choose the topic of your choice and take into account the ethnic group’s special needs. Describe your approach, and provide details regarding the assumed characteristics of the ethnic group. Identify the tools or technology, services, and resources needed for developing the instructional gaming material.

Hypertension is the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in Haitian adults.  The three primary factors contributing to the hypertension disease in Haiti is as follows: their stroke death rate (which is the highest), their salt intake, and their environment (due to poverty and lack of health care).

I decided to teach a class of approximately 20 individuals, 75% Haitian adults, on the topic of hypertension along with its causes, prevention, management, and regulation. In this class, hypertension can be explained very visually and interactively measuring blood pressure, as well as, explained and demonstrated by, for example, filling a red and blue balloon with water as arties and veins.  I would explain the physiology of blood pressure, arteries, and veins; as well as, how pressure is pumped in and out of the chambers, along with what happens when too much pressure fills the bag (arties and veins). A sphygmomanometer can be displayed and explain how it is used to measure blood pressure giving the ideal target numbers.  Again, the students in the class can practice taking their blood pressure on each other while the educator can observe proper utilization and technique.

Lecture can be defined as a highly-structured method by which the educator verbally communicates information directly to the students for the purpose of instruction (Bastable, 2014). I would lecture this group of students on the importance of healthy lifestyle such as: quitting smoking, eating healthy, minimizing salt intake, and daily active activity (30 minutes or more). I would lecture how these lifestyle changes can significantly reduce blood pressure. This can also be done by drawing pictures of heart healthy food or even demonstrating and providing heart healthy snacks and activity.

Gaming can be applied to keep the class motivated and engaged. Gaming is an instructional method requiring the learning students to participate in a competitive activity with preset rules (Bastable, 2014).  This can be done with flash cards that have pictures of food with low sodium and high sodium contents. I would be testing the knowledge of the learners, and see who gets the answers correct. As an incentive, I would reward prizes such as: manual blood pressure machines and a consultation, with myself, on wellness lifestyle changes.  Also, I would implement ways to keep track of their daily lifestyle and medication regimes. For example, how to keep a blood pressure log, diet log, and log of their routine medical visits and future appointments. The outcome and success of the class will simply be measured by observing the blood pressure log and having controlled blood pressure numbers along with healthy lifestyle.
