I am hoping to work with probably the most challenging populations in the community: youth who are not able to conform to the requirements of traditional education and human service programs; and those who need personalized attention and mentoring programs to hopefully become more productive citizen because of life changing decisions. During 2015, there were 43 juvenile victims of murder in Baltimore, accounting for eight percent of the total murder victims (Williams, 2015, p.14). This is a community problem which needs to be addressed at all levels. This is why I chose the population area of children and families and forensic population. I believe these two areas will give me the necessary tools needed to reach this population.

I believe that if I implement the Generalist Intervention Model (GIM) into my approach to reaching my population I will have a more guided path to follow. I do understand that this model might not work for each situation or it might need changes during the processes but it can be used as a foundation when working with my population. The first step that will assist me in working with this population is engagement. Engagement involves build the line of communication between yourself, the client and possible other agencies that can help address the issues (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2014, p.39). When dealing with trouble youth I have found that it is important to build a rapport. There are different signals that are sent out during the engagement process so as a practitioner we must remain aware of our verbal and nonverbal cues, because these can help to gain or lose the trust of our clients.

Even though all the steps and subsets are important I believe for me it is engagement and planning.  The assessment phase does give you a picture of all the issues involved but that comes natural after you build the rapport. Planning involves the eight specific “what to do” objectives (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2014, p.39). The reason I find this important is because it gives you the chance to empower the client on making a difference in their own lives. By working together to establish goals, objectives and action steps the client is taking responsibility while you help to guide and motivate them to their finale goals.

I see a challenge in this population being the environment. Even if the client is able to make a huge change in self, the environment that they return to must be willing to allow them to stay on that path. From my experience with being in Baltimore, the neighborhoods are the biggest obstacle for most of the youth. The neighborhood includes adults, law enforcements, and teachers and especially peers. Until this macro level can be corrected it will be a challenge to correct the micro.

The population that I interested me would have to the Hispanic community that are here in the United State, that have a language barrier. According to the Unique Challenges of Surveying U.S. Hispanic are growing and reaching nearly 57 million in 2015, meaning that the makeup is 18% of the population. (Brown, A., 2015).

The Generalist Interventional Model will prepare you to help people with their individualized personal issues and with some very broad problems that are affecting the whole community. (Kirst-Ashman, K., Hull G. Understanding Generalist Practice 7th edition.). The Generalists Model explains different approaches the one that fit with working working with this population is the second generalist positioners that uses a problem-solving, planned approach to resolve any issues that encountered by of these system.

The purpose of the social worker working with different populations is to discuss through four different points (1). Enhance capacities of peoples (2) link people with systems that provide them resource services, and operations of these system and (4) contribute to the development and improvement of social policy” (Pincus &Minahan, 1973, p.8)

They also are targeting the external environment for change is the second aspect that make social workers to influence and change in order to accomplish (their) goals and that’s called the target system or target change. (Hepworth, Rooney, Ronney & StromGottfied, 2013, Pincus & Minahan, 1973, p.58.

I viewed the PDF on 5 ways to Balance your life and I found the tips to be helpful. I realize that I must be organized and have discipline in order to be successful in my online courses.  As a graduate student, my job is to log in weekly and follow the specific requirements expected of me. I plan to have set times each day to log into blackboard. By logging in daily, I would be able to check for upcoming assignments and updates. I will utilize a planner to write assignment due dates and reminders. By using this strategy I should not have a problem with poor time management.

Another strategy is knowing how and when to communicate with faculty. I plan to become comfortable with using the student support team if needed. The goal is to have effective communication throughout this entire course.  I plan to familiarize myself with the resources Walden University provides. The more knowledgeable I will be, the less confusion I will have. This will allow me to be knowledgeable on whom to direct my questions to when assistance is needed.

In addition, I plan to become comfortable with navigating my way through blackboard tabs. This will prevent me from missing any work assignments. There are webinars located on the schools websites that promotes students success. I plan to utilize those to promote great performance and showcase my best work in this course. The strategies mentioned will help me be able to make noticeable progress and make these six weeks a lot easier.

Two strategies I plan to practice to improve my online learning experience in the MSW program are time management skills and building personal time into my schedule. In practicing time management skills, I plan focus all of my daily activities around one ultimate goal and apportion specific activities to do on each day of the week as to not fall behind on my academic, professional, and household duties.  As stated in Time Management Strategies, I will focus on my “big picture goal,” which is to become a Child Welfare Social Worker. I will ensure that all tasks included into my schedule will lead up to achieving this goal. I am already an extremely organized person. I currently use a very detailed day planner to organize my daily tasks and activities. Now that classes have begun, I have added to my planner the tasks I must complete daily for my classes, including my time management strategies for each day. I believe that keeping on a strict time management and planning schedule, focused around my ultimate goal, will assist me in successfully completing one day at a time.

In addition to practicing time management skills, I plan on making sure I’m building in personal time into my busy schedule. I recognize that I find it hard to ascertain when it is time to take some much needed time for myself. I am often so set on my goals that I overlook this very important task. As seen in 5 Ways to Balance your Life, I will make sure that at least twice a month I will plan something fun to look forward to at the end of the week as an incentive to complete the weeks tasks in a timely manner. I will also make sure to set a little bit of time aside at the end of each day to relax and recharge from the day’s activities.
