Explain at least three reasons for the rise of conservatism in the last part of the 20th century.

There were several factors that led to the increase of conservatism during this time period. One, was the Vietnam War. It was costly and proved to much for America to handle. It financially drained America on its economy and caused a financial increase on the federal debt through the 1970’s. Throughout the process of the war, many Americans begin to question their involvement in the war and any future wars to come. Most Americans saw the Vietnam War as an unwinnable war (Barnes & Bowles, 2015, sec. 13.1, para. 14). Second, was the revelation of the Pentagon Papers which showed the United States decision making regarding the Vietnam War (The Pentagon Papers, 1945-1967). Information contained within these papers only further the damaged the trust that the American people had on the government (sec. 13.1, para. 13). Third, The Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979 proved to be a big failure when then President Jimmy Carter failed to negotiate an agreement for the hostage’s release (sec. 13.3, para. 6).

Explain at least one way in which the rise of conservatism had a positive or negative impact for a specific group of Americans.

At least one way in which the rise of conservatism had been positive or negative for a specific group of Americans. Reagan changed the diminishing military he rebuilt the armed forces. He helped America to become stronger in our military. His visions was for a strong military he had other visions as well. He cut taxes too this was more beneficial for people who made a lot of money. The negative was towards the “working poor” (Bowles 2011). Reagan cut several programs to help middle to lower income families, social service programs. He cut food stamps and housing programs and others. This created a huge issues “the result was a dramatic rise of homelessness in America” (Bowles 2011). Another group of Americans that were negatively impacted were women. Reagan did not side with women in their right to choose. Reagan advocated an amendment that would prohibit abortions. Except in the situation that the mother’s life was in danger.

Then, select an issue that you feel is important today. How does a knowledge of history help us gain a better understanding of this issue?

An important issue happening today is racial profiling or racism/stereotyping. In other words, people having biased perceptions of another based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion. Sure we have come a long way since the turn of the 20th century but in my opinion, we still have a way to go. History helps gain a better understanding about racial profiling/racism because racism has always been a major issue. History contains the knowledge of the events that occurred one after another that were solely based on racism and the struggles many people of all mankind endured over the years and the paths they took and the wars they fought which all lead up to where we are all standing today
