Key Concepts in the Nursing Profession
Scenario I
Quality and Safety
The concept of quality and safety involves ensuring that right medication, treatment, and healthcare is accorded to the patients. Safety ensures that nurses avoid making errors in handling patients and that they are prevented from any harm when offering medical care. For example, patients should be provided with quality supplies as well be in an environment that does not pose any threat or danger to them. Quality and Safety also reflects on the fundamental requirement of ensuring that safe and effective nursing care is achieved.
Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence-based practice concept requires nurses to use the best evidence in making different decision regarding a patient. For example, before prescribing a patient any medication, a nurse is required to ensure that proper tests were conducted to reveal the issue with the subject and that the right medication is administered. Evidence-based research also incorporates research in ensuring that new standards are properly applied in the nursing practice.
Applied Leadership
Applied leadership concept calls on understanding the importance of leadership in the nursing environment. The ability to effectively communicate with the overall management team in a professional way makes a nurse a leader. Leadership also include following the ethics provided in the nursing profession. For example, treatment and offering of services should not be discriminatory.
Community and Population Health
The concept involves promoting good health in the community and improving the patient outcomes. Coming up with community projects and allowing the population to access medical care easily is incorporated in this concept. For example, developing a program that is aimed at ensuring that children in the community are immunized against different diseases is an act that should be developed by nurses in their profession.
Experiences that Influenced mu decision to become a nurse
In my home area, there was a shortage of nurses in the hospitals. People had to travel long to get affordable medical care. Children and women suffered due of lack of nurses in the hospitals. My passion to help people saw me enroll for this course so as to help people around my area and many other patients in general. The experience of seeing people suffer is important to me as it helps me push on even in most difficult times of this career. The lessons learnt from the experience will be integrated in learning different processes that will be important in helping the society.
Scenario II
Describe how you would respond to Mr. Newcomb’s request.
Mr. Newcomb request is to lie to her wife so as to allow him to have time with his mistress. Nursing ethics do not allow for a practitioner to lie to a patient or their family. Even though the present condition of the patient states that his time could be near, I would not lie to the wife so as to protect the mistress. I would however not prevent him from meeting his mistress.
Evaluate how you applied the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice to the scenario.
The principle of beneficence dictates that an action should be done to benefit others and in most cases these actions are done to prevent harm or to improve the status of others. Non-maleficence on the other hand is the principle of avoidance of harm or hurt to a patient. The principle of autonomy gives the nurse the authority to make decisions in accordance with their professional knowledge. Justice allows one to do what is right and also to give what is due to someone. In the scenario of Newcomb, I made the decision not to lie to his wife following the principle of autonomy. I also applied justice to see that he gets what is due to him by having his mistress visit. I protected him from any harm following the non-maleficence and beneficence principles and allowed him to be visited by the mistress.
Examine how personal beliefs and values influenced your response to the scenario.
My personal beliefs dictate that it is wrong to cheat in a marriage or relationship. Mr. Newcomb cheater on his wife with a mistress and that was not acceptable. The fact that he cheated played a major role in ensuring that his request of lying to his wife is not honored.
Three strategies of promoting self-care
Self-care involves daily activities that are done to promote good health. The first strategy is by choosing the right hobbies. It is important to have healthy life by engaging in activities that relieve stress. Happiness and joy is important in improving personal health. The second strategy involves eating health. It is strategy in self-care that ensures that the body is supplied with all the necessarily nutrients to help in growth and development. The third strategy is doing exercises. Exercises help in opening muscle joints and relaxing the body. It also helps in ensuring fitness and good health.
Scenario III
Professional Nursing Practice
Nursing Theory: Need Theory by Virginia Henderson
Need Nursing theory was developed by Virginia Anderson from her experience and education focusing on nursing profession. The theory focuses on the importance of increasing the independence of the patient so as to make the after hospitalization process easy. Included in the theory were some assumptions. The first assumption states that nurses should care for the patients up to the point where the patients can care for themselves. The second assumption stated that nurses should be educated and have the right skills to deal with the work. The last assumption from the need theory states that nurses should be devoted to help the patients at all times both during the day and at night.
The theory above clearly describes, explains, and predicts excellent nursing practices. The definition clearly reaffirms the essence of the nursing profession which is to help the patients until they can be independent by providing them with all their needs. Excellent nursing practices require practitioners to be educated in both science and the art and the theory confirms it. Unconditional devotion to the well-being of the patient is another important nursing practice expounded by the theory. The theory therefore explains the practical life of a nurse.
The identified theory above fits my professional practice in different ways. To start with, the theory stipulates how the patient will be treated as well as the duration to cover. My professional practices covers helping the patients get well soon by providing them with all their needs and ensuring that they remain safe by being there at all times. My professional practice also requires me to apply the knowledge learn from the course and follow the nursing ethics when providing healthcare services. The theory has stipulated all this in its assumptions.
Contributions of Two Nursing Figures in the 19th or 20th Century
Florence Nightingale: Born May 12, 1820
Florence Nightingale developed keen interest in nursing but her parents did not allow her. However, despite the setback, she joined a nursing school in Germany and got posted to hospital in London to provide care to soldier of War from Turkey. She later established the Nightingale Training School for the nurses in London and later spread to other regions of the world. The historic figure was greatly concerned with military health and sanitation. She also introduced hospital planning and brought up practices that are used until today in the care system.
Margaret Sanger: Born September 14, 1879
Margaret experienced a difficult life when she was growing. After her mother’s death, she decided to enlighten women about sex education and women’s health. She was a nurse before giving up the career to educate women. Her call to serve the people was out of her personal experience whereby her mother experienced 7 miscarriages before death. Her concern about the care of pregnant women helped in saving a lot of lives. She opened birth control clinics all over the United States during her time and she was the first to do so. She offered counseling to women and birth control information. She wrote several magazines and books concerning health of the women. She was among those who pioneered the ruling to allow prescription of contraceptives to women and families in 1927.
Differences in Contributions of the two Historical Figures above
The two historical figures contributed in different sectors within the nursing profession. Nightingale contributed in the patient safety and especially for those with physical injuries. She also played a major role in ensuring that there is proper hospital planning. Some of her practices are being employed till today. On the other hand, Sanger engaged more in women health in the field of nursing. Her main aim was to educate the women on the right way to protect themselves from miscarriages and have a health pregnancy life.
How the two Historical Figures influenced my Work as a Nurse in the 21st Century
The two nurses played a major role in ensuring that the modern form of nursing properly caters for the patients. Currently, there are standards that I follow when administering help to the patients and victims of war or nay other physical injuries. Some of these procedures and standards were introduced by these historical figures. For example, Nightingale came up with the standards and procedures to be used in the accidents and emergency halls. The historical figures positively influenced my work as a nurse as they solved many problems in the nursing profession that were pressing to the people and to the patient. Maternal health and women healthcare played a major role in streamlining the healthcare sector in this field in this century.
Functional Differences between State Board of Nursing and American Nurses Association
State board of nursing has the major function of protecting the public’s health by ensuring that safe and competent nursing care is offered by the licensed nurses. It is a licensing and regulatory body that determines the scope of nurses. It is the primary body that offers licenses to nurses. American Nurses Association on the other hand is an umbrella body that performs the functions of representing the interests of millions of registered nurses. Its main aim is to improve healthcare for all people.
Roles of these Organizations
The main role of these organizations is to ensure that there is quality health for all the people. The organizations also work to ensure that grievances and needs of the nurses are listened to by the relevant authorities. The organizations have also a role of ensuring that nurses who practice in hospitals around America are properly trained and skilled.
How these two Organizations Influence my Nursing Practice
My nursing practice is regulated by the state board of nursing. All activities that I carry out as a nurse are regulated by the organization. I have to follow all the rules and regulations to ensure that my license is not revoked. American Nurses Association on the other hand gives me the platform to carry out my nursing practice in a manner that will be of benefit to patient. The organization also ensures that I am given the environment to work exemplary as a nurse. In short, the two organizations ensure that I provide the right working environment for all patients through quality services.
Implications associated with failure to maintain License Requirements
Nurses are required to maintain the license requirements failure to which there are legal implications. Some of the actions that are prohibited include alcohol and substance abuse at work, unethical and unprofessional practices, and fraud among others. The disciplinary process according to the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution includes revocation of the license. It means that the nurse cannot practice until charges against him are cleared. The revocation will be done by the Board of Nurses and if the nurse is found guilty, he/she will face the penalty given without favor.
Differences between Registered Nursing License Requirements in a Compact State versus a Non-Compact State
Registered nursing license compact allows nurses who have a multistate license to practice their profession either physically or electronically from their home states. It also allows them to operate from their original Nurse Licensure Compact states. In order to be issued with a compact state license, the nurse must be from one of the 25 compact nursing states and must be qualified and skilled. The compact states are the states that practice the same type of nursing with regulations and standards. A compact nurse will also need to get a license to work in a non-compact nursing state. Also, a non-compact nurse cannot work in any of the compact states but can apply for a license if working in a compact state. The license will allow them to work in only that compact state and no other. It means that they do not have a multistate privilege like the compact nurses.
