WHAT QUALIFIES AS AN ACADEMIC QUALITY SOURCE

ACCEPTABLE:  An academic-quality source is reliable, factual, trustworthy, objective, credible, and up-to-date.  The best are scholarly papers, research studies, definitive books, data analyses, or articles published in peer-reviewed journals.  The purpose of the source is academic study, not to forward a cause, push an agenda, or sell a product.  The authors are scholars, experts, or others who are objective, credible, thorough, trustworthy, and reliable.  The best place to find academic-quality references is the online UMUC Library.
NOT ACCEPTABLE:  Other sources such as general Internet websites are not considered acceptable for academic research in university-level courses.  These include dictionaries, encyclopedias, wikis (such as WikiPedia), blogs, news releases, course textbooks, and general-answer sites like About.com, eZine, eHow, Buzzle, and such.  Such sites do not contain the same rigorous standards as academic sources, are not peer-reviewed for accuracy, and are often intended to be commercial so they are not acceptable sources for university-level research.
