week 4 seminar posting and research assignments civil rights

One of the ways we engage the material is through our seminars. For each chapter there is a seminar. They are not discussions. In a discussion it might be acceptable to simply state your opinion but that is not true in a seminar. Education is not merely about expressing your opinions. Rather, it is about deciding whether to keep, revise or discard your opinions in light of new information. When you present facts to back up your views, you are helping your classmates to make this decision. Therefore, there will be an absolute, iron-clad rule in this course that in every seminar question or response you must provide factual information (150 to 250 words).
For each seminar you have three assignments. First you must ask a question that will help the other students gain a better understanding of some aspect of the module. This is a question which requires thought and discussion, not a one word answer. It is not a research question but one that is directly related to the text. Both question and answer are found in the text. Please write out your question (150 - 250 words) and post it online at least 48 hours before the seminar.

I have attached the topic to cover in the discussion posting (sex discrimination) and make sure you have fact in the discussion and a question about the topic at the end that a student can answer with fact and min of 150 words

Example need to be done exactly like this “Creating appropriate standards for implementing the equal protection provisions granted under the constitution and dismantling previous impermissible discriminations are exceedingly difficult tasks. In some cases it is as simple as striking down a law or a statute, removing the offending discriminator. However in other cases the solution may not be as simple. In the 1960’s many believed that striking down statues alone would not be enough to remedy the effects of past discriminatory practices, they believed that positive action would be required to ensure that equality was achieved. The solution they arrived at was (and is) affirmative action. Affirmative action is loosely founded upon two different actions, first is the practice of providing preference to historically disadvantaged groups in hiring, promotion, and admission to educational programs. The second, referred to as “set-aside” programs require that a certain amount of government business be awarded to minority business. As with most such controversial issues, there are strong opinions on both sides of the issue with advocates both for and against affirmative action programs.

What are the arguments for and against affirmative action and how are they supported by the cases in the text?  “
