Grammar and Writing Exercise

C&J 333 – Business & Professional Communication

45 points

Purpose:

Writing skills are essential to presenting oneself well and communicating effectively in professional settings. Following the rules of Standard English grammar is an important way to demonstrate written communication competence in the business world.

Objectives:

  • Students will review the rules and mechanics of English grammar.

  • Students will write a short business report demonstrating their best writing skills.

  • Students will edit their work for grammar, language, spelling, and punctuation.

Scenario:

You are applying for a job that requires a one-page writing sample as part of the application process. Following is the prompt you are given by the employer:

In a concise, well-organized statement, describe your leadership philosophy.

For this assignment, you will write a one-page response to this prompt using correct grammar, language, spelling, and punctuation to demonstrate to the employer that you are an effective communicator (not to mention a strong leader!).

Requirements:

Your response must contain examples of the following elements of correct usage, corresponding to the elements of grammar covered in your reading for this course:

  • Singular, plural, proper, and collective nouns

  • Pronouns in the nominative, objective, and possessive cases

  • Commas, semicolons, and colons

In addition to these elements, ALL grammar, language use, punctuation, spelling, etc. should be correct.

Hint: For this assignment, it’s easiest to write your leadership philosophy statement out first and then go back and edit to make sure you’re including the required examples. Writing that forces the writer to use particular words and phrases, is not typically good writing.

When you are finished writing and editing your statement, save it as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx) and upload it. Your submission will be evaluated using the criteria in the rubric below.
