HarrisDesign Inc., is an art design company that uses both traditional design as well as interactive media to bring artwork to life. With over 3,000 license child care centers located in Maryland alone, either run privately, through an agency or within a school this product will open the minds of children and introduce them to a world of discovery. By introducing a bright vibrant, non-toxic, creative environment; this will motivate children’s creative minds to think outside of the box, explore and discover their global community.

Company, Product, and Description

HarrisDesign Inc. brings artwork to life with cofounders Melissa and Gerliene Harris who have a combined experience of over 35 years. This company started out active in the community doing charitable work back in 1985. The services that are provided are focused on commercial property, schools, libraries, daycare centers and office buildings. Their goal is to develop creative thought and relaxation. Gerliene and Melissa are both licensed interior designers. They started out by doing small jobs for community centers and recently started to incorporate the interactive media in 2016.

The services that will be provided is modernization of existing wall morals both on the inside and outside of buildings and creating new works of art for people to explore. All will include media of sight and sound. To include digital media work inside of buildings to provide a continued changing option to the artwork that is displayed. As independent contractors HarrisDesign Inc. is not limited to only constructing large scaled jobs but will also work on smaller pieces to fit the space provided. HarrisDesign Inc, Gerliene will be the CEO and focus on marketing to a wider environment and employing local artist while partnering with city agencies to create programs that connect the process of muralism with art educations, community restoration and other programs.

Customers and Competitors

The artwork dedicated to schools and buildings are usually just a few photos placed throughout the hallways. There aren’t many works of art that span the entire length of the wall and stretch onto the ceiling. Mural, a painting applied to and made integral with the surface of a wall or ceiling. The term may properly include painting on fired tiles but ordinarily does not refer to mosaic decoration unless the mosaic forms part of the overall scheme of the painting. (Mural, 2017). By engaging the customer and the students to participate in the creation of the design helps to create a feeling of inclusiveness.

Currently in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia region there is no company that incorporates community and organizational volunteers to assist with creating the murals within the organization. This helps to build a sense of community and belonging. From the children at the schools and daycare centers to employees working within the buildings having everyone give a little of their time will encourage a sense of pride. The experience of art moves us from the everyday into the realm of possibility,’ and that goes for individuals, communities, systems, the city as a whole. (Logos Opticos, 2017) Learning to create and appreciate visual aesthetics may be more important than ever to the development of the next generation of children as they grow up. (The Importance of Art in Child Development, 2012)

Marketing and Research

Expansion will be based upon the need for internships at local art colleges and target beautifying local neighborhoods through grants from the city. There is strength this process due to the need for college students to complete internship time and local government’s attempt at giving back to the community. The issues that do arise from having a company such as this is that many community leaders, school boards and other organizations do not see the increased need for the arts in the community. A lot is focused on core ideas and teachings of mainly math and language. By incorporating digital media into the company there are hopes that the public will see the evolution of art and design. Cost plays a major factor for HarrisDesign with the incorporation of digital media the cost of a mural can double depending on the size.

The threat of expansion brings the threat of failure due to moving outward and expanding into more areas that may not be as willing to improve the work, school and or childcare environment by incorporating art and design. By not seeing or understanding the developmental benefits of art such as motor skills, language skills, decision making and visual learning. “Children need to know more about the world than just what they can learn through text and numbers. Art education teaches students how to interpret, criticize, and use visual information, and how to make choices based on it.” (The Importance of Art in Child Development, 2012)
