This template crosswalks the Assignment 1 instructions and the grading rubric to help ensure that you address everythin g required by the assignment. Your final paper should be 4 to 5 pages in length (excluding this cover page and the references page(s) at the end. If you do go over 5 pages, just make sure that the information you provide is not redundant and adds value to your reflections. MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 1 Introduction You wil begin with an introduction here. In this section you will write your thesis paragraph (or statement, depending on how you learned it in high school English composition). Typically, you start with some general observations about leadership and the importance of leadership in today’s organ izations. You will then drill downt to specific areas you plan to address in your paper in the order in which you plan to address them. Because of this, sometimes the introduction is not finalized until you complete the other sections of your paper. My Leadership Experiences A quick note about formatting: The body of the paper should have one inch margins and use a 12 pt. font that is easy to read, such as Times New Roman. To aid ease of reading , double space throughout the paper. Align the manu script flush left, resulting in an uneven right margin. Indent paragraphs five spaces (or set your tab to .5) . Page numbers are one inch from the top right edge of the paper. This template incorporates much of the required APA (2009) formatting. In this section you will address the first two elements of the assignment 1 instructions. I have provided sub -headings to help you organize your response to each of the two parts of the response required for this section. My Current Role In this section, descri be the leadership and managerial aspects of your most recent professional role. Do you lead a team or teams or are you an individual contributor? You may be a full -time student or between jobs. In these cases, think about the leadership and managerial aspects of whatever role you find yourself. If you are not in a professional role and have difficulty finding leadership and managerial elements of your current situation, think about leadership you provide in your community, in your school, and in your fa mily. MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 2 Key Leadership Experiences In this section, briefly identify and describe two key experiences that have impacted you as a leader or as an aspiring leader. You may have participated in a great experience that taught you a lot about who you are (or wa nted to be) as a leader or perhaps you learned by being part of, or observing, a leadership situation that did NOT go well. Think back on those experiences that you believe contributed in some way to your current beliefs and b ehaviors relating to leaderwh ip. My Leadership Strengths In this section, please describe two key strengths from Jack Welch’s Foundational Principles and 8 Essential Rules, as they pertain to your leadership development. Why did you choose those particular strengths ? What makes them critical for you to ensure you direct your energy as you proceed through your leadership journey? My Emotional Intelligence In this section, think about your current level of emotional intelligence. You will need to integrate Goleman’s (1998) article “What Makes a Leader” that is a required reading in the Week 3 unit. On page 1 of this article, Goleman defines and provides ha llmarks for each of several components of Emotional Intelligence (i.e., self -awareness, self -regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill). Review each of these components and their examples and isolate a couple of components that you believe have con tributed to the leadership strengths you identified in the section immediately above. Alternatively, you can also identify a couple of areas that you need to refine or strengthen to have maximum leadership effectiveness. My DiSC Profile In this section, you will reflect on your DiSC Profile that was generated as Part of your Week 2 requirements as it relates to your leadership strengths. Recall that the DiSC is a behavior MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 3 assessment tool that focuses on four different behavioral traits: dominan ce, influence, conscientiousness and steadiness. Think about how your DiSC style contributes to those strengths. For example, if you identified that one of your strengths was your ability to maintain harmony in your team and you have an “S” (steadiness) style, reference your DiSC report for areas where this behavior is addressed — you will find that maintaining harmony and being a peacemaker is a hallmark of an S style. Leadership Skill Development In this section, you will identify two or three leadersh ip skills that you would like to master in the future. After you have identified these skills, address each one in relation to what steps you will take to master those skills and how you will measure success. Conclusion Similar to the introduction where you provided your thesis of what you will cover in your paper, the conclusion is the section where you summarize what you covered with one or two key insights. Highlight the most important aspects of your paper that you wo uld like the reader to remember. MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 4 In -Text Citations Within the body of the paper, when concepts from specific sources are used, a citation containing the author’s last name and year of publication within parentheses indicates the cited source; for example, (Welch, 2005). The author’s last name corresponds with the entry on the References page, allowing readers to look up the source of the citation. We do not recommend the use of footnotes. All citations should be placed in the body of the documen t. This is typically done as a parenthetical entry after you share a sentence(s) that need to be referenced. For example:  Jack Welch (2015) noted that when you become a leader, the focus is on growing others. Alternatively, if you don't reference the author name in your paper, you have to include the last name in the in -text citation. For example:  As a leader develops, the focus becomes more about developing the skills and talents of others (Welch, 2015). Finally, for in -text citations, if you use a d irect quote, you have to include the page number i n the parenthesis. For example:  "Before you become a leader, leadership is about growing yourself. Once you become a leader, leadership is about growing others." (Welch, 2015, p. 45). References At the e nd of your papers you will include a reference entry for every work that you cited in the paper. All sources applied in your paper must be cited on a separate “References” page at the end of the paper. It is not included in the page count. MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 5 The format o f the references vary by the type of entry (book, journal article, online resource). I encourage you to visit the Purdue Online Writing Lab to get examples of how to properly cite various works n APA formatting. Do not list references that are not appl ied . Note that APA uses the "hanging indent" style for references. One easy way to do this is to type each reference without worrying about the hanging indent. When finished, select (highlight) all the references and then open the Citations and Bi bliography dialog box in Word . Select APA. If available, i n the Indentation area, under Special, choose Hanging and then a distance for the indentation. Course Lectures and Media Application of course materials is required in papers and discussions. For discussions, informal or formal citations are acceptable. For example:  "As noted in our first lecture..."  Or, (Week 3, Lecture 1) or (W3, L1)  If material is from another course, indicate the course number and as much information as recollected, (JWIxxx, Week 3, Video) For papers, use formal citations and references as follows.  If the material is from the current course: (Week 3, Lecture 1)  If the material is from another course: (JWIxxx, Week 3, Lecture 1), or as much as recollected For the reference section in a paper, simply list JWIxxx, Week 3, Lecture 1, with the lecture title, as appropriate. References are not required in discussions unless the material is found outside of the course content. MY LEADERSHIP PROFILE 6 Quotations Originality is an important aspect of graduate writing. To ensure original thinking , “quoting should be done only sparingly; be sure that you have a good reason to include a direct quotation when you decide to do so ” (Quoting, Paraphrasing, n.d.) . Notice t he placement of the quotation marks, citation, and final punctuation after the citation . Guidelines for quotations are based upon the length of the quote. Quotes with fewer than 40 words are quoted directly in the sentence. The in-text citation for a dire ct quote m ust include the author(s), year, and page number. See the example for the indented quote below. Quotations longer than 40 words follow different guidelines. Include these quotes in an indented block. Start long quotes on a new line and inden t five spaces from the left margin. Also, double - space the lines and omit quotation marks. If more than one paragraph is quoted , indent the first line of additional paragraphs by .5 inch. Include a reference citation after the closing punctuation.
