Program Development through Community Needs Assessment

[Introductory paragraph that introduces the paper. You might paraphrase the scenario and give an overview about what you plan to do.]

Program Development

[Description of program you would create that addresses the needs of the children, families, and community]

Research Tools

[Describe the tools or strategies you would use to find out about the needs of the community]

A Needs Assessment

[Describe the outcome of the assessment and how you decided upon the program you created. Explain how the potential children and families will be served based on this assessment outcome.]

Mission Statement

[Create a mission statement of your program that incorporates the purpose and goals of your program. Be sure you keep in mind the cultural, educational, and economic levels of the children and families in your goals.]

Type of Program

[Describe the type of program you are offering in more detail keeping in mind the program’s mission statement.]

Ages of children to be served

[Describe ages of children served remembering that early childhood includes children from birth to age 8. You can have anything between those ages.]

Space Requirements for program

[Discuss the space requirements of your center, both indoor and outdoor. Remember we learned how to calculate this based on the number of children times number of square feet per child. You learned this in unit 5.]

Days and Hours of Operation

[Describe how the needs assessment helped you determine the hours of operation.]

Early Childhood Curriculum and/or activities offered

[Describe the considerations will you take into account when choosing a quality early childhood curriculum or activities for the children in your program? Describe how child development theories will be applied in your program.]

Standards of Practice for your proposed program

[From assignment description: “All programs for children are expected to provide high quality programs for young children. In addition to applicable local or state licensing requirements, administrators are “expected to go beyond meeting minimum standards established by the states and strive for higher standards of quality” (Sciarra, Lynch, Adams, and Dorsey, 2015, p. 31). The best known and most widely accepted standards for quality practices for programs serving children, birth through kindergarten, are those developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (p. 31). For programs serving older children, there are standards for school-age programs and family child care programs.

Using course readings and 3 scholarly references obtained from the KU Library, compare research-based frameworks for evaluating early childhood programs for continuous quality improvement. Based on the assessed needs of the children your program serves, choose an evaluation framework and describe how it can be used to establish a high quality program and ensure continuous quality improvement.”

Some research-based frameworks include things like Environmental Rating Scales and Quality Rating Improvement Systems (QRIS) like we discussed in seminar. You could find others in the KU library. Compare at least two of these measures as you compare and contrast them. Then explain which one you will use for your program and how it will be used.]

Program Funding and Marketing

[For the community described in the scenario, describe what marketing tools and strategies would be most effective for your proposed program. Write about challenges you might face in communicating with families and the community. Write about the funding sources you will seek to fund your program.]

Leadership and Advocacy

[Describe the leadership style that will work best for your proposed organization and the specific leadership traits that will help you successfully administrate the program. We talked about this in units 1 and 2. Based on the needs assessment, describe opportunities for leadership and advocacy. Describe your specific plan for working with families, volunteers, and the community.]

The classroom has these written in incorrect APA formatting in Unit 9 “readings”. Here is an example of the incorrect and corrected versions:

Incorrect:

Crowley, A., Sangchoon, J., and Rosenthal, M. (2013). Health and safety of child care centers: an analysis of licensing specialists: Reports of routine, unannounced Inspections. American Journal of Public Health, 103 (10), p. 52-58.

Correct:

Crowley, A. A., Jeon, S., & Rosenthal, M. S. (2013). Health and safety of child care centers: An analysis of licensing specialists: Reports of routine, unannounced inspections. American Journal of Public Health, 103 (10), 52-58.
The mistakes were that the authors' second initials were dropped.  For one author the first name was use as a last name and the last name was given an initial.  The word "and" was used instead of the symbol "&" and there were some capitalized letters in the title that needed to be lower case and some lower case letters that needed to be capitalized. The letter "p" was used for page number and is not supposed to be included in the full reference.  You do that for the in-text page number, but not in the full reference.  This Crowley article as an example for how to do it. This is an example of how to do it correctly and then you can use it as a model to correct the errors of the others by obtaining the articles in doc sharing and looking at the authors' initials and information given and correct it in the reference. This will be a good exercise to help you really learn APA formatting for journals.
