Cultural Competence in Social Work

Introduction

From a general perspective, social work has largely been explained as a helping profession. The practice is founded on the premise that it is supposed to ensure that there is the empowering of the client. There are some ethics that area supposed to guide each profession and social work is not any different. The ability to be sensitive to the client is one of how efficiency can be achieved in the social case management is to ensure that there is an understanding of the cultural background of all the clients . It is therefore interesting to observe some of the important aspects that the article brings to fore concerning the Latino population in the USA and how the understanding of their culture would be an important way of dealing with their cultural inclinations.

Overview of the Latino Culture

One of the things that one learns is that the Latinos are the one population segment that is increasing in the USA, with estimates showing that they will form a quarter of the total population by 2050. It is also worth to note that the population is mainly immigrants, which implies that they have variations of culture with the rest of the USA population. Interestingly, the Latinos cannot be seen as having a shared culture, with the article insisting that ‘that the very concept of a singular Latino identity or ethnic group affiliation is problematic’ (Furman, Negi, Iwamoto, Rowan, Shukraft & Gragg, 2009). The implication being that there should be more than just the classification of just a client being a Latino, but there should be a comprehension of their culture and their origin, though most mainly come from Mexico .

Case competence

There are the shared problems that are commonly observed among the Latinos in the USA. Just as has been observed among most migrant communities in the USA, the Latinos are mainly faced with the problem of poverty, which means that there is a high discrepancy between the economic status of the natives and those of Latinos. There has been an observation that if the people cannot access equal opportunities because of their social status, there is the likelihood that there will be arising from other problems such as substance abuse and forming of gangs.

When one looks at the crime statistics, especially in Chicago and California, most of the gang members in these communities tend to be from the Latino community (Lane & Meeker, 2014). It is a problem that expands to set other problems such as gang violence, loss of parents, and fight for drug territories among other aspects. The implication is that social case management needs to understand more than the client is likely to face, but rather an understanding of the sociological reality of the Latino community, which the client may not be aware but could be contributing to their problems.

The value of family is also highly inclined to the Latino community. The people have a tendency to fall to families in times of problems. It implies that the social case management should have the ability to involve the extended members of the family in the case management. So, the social work profession, being a helping and empowering profession, the focus should be able to ensure that the Latino clients, despite their limited social and economic opportunities.

Conclusion

The main point that the article tries to raise is that there is a cultural background that all clients have come from, and which affects their personality and wellbeing in the first place. The competence of the social work case management should be analyzed on its ability to comprehensively deal with the holistic aspects that affect the clien t .
