How does leukemia result in bone pain or easy bruising and bleeding?

Final Presentation Rubric

DUE DATE JULY 16th

Effectiveness of Presentation 7 points

  • Case study evolves over time (1 point)

  • Creativity is demonstrated (6 points)

    • Utilize tools like: www.voicethread.com, www.powtoon.com, www.screencast-omatic.com, or voiceover powerpoints. Most students choose powtoons supplemented with diagram or powerpoints. If you don’t use voiceover, then you must put your script in the notes under each powerpoint slide.

    • Graphics are required to map out the pathophysiologic pathway from the cellular level to symptom.

Content 28 points

The purpose of this project is to choose a pathophysiology topic that excites you. Pick a disease process that you want to learn more about. You will be developing a case scenario based on what disease process your“patient” has. It should be an evolving case scenario. You will need to present a brief history (think about things that might be contributing to the diagnosis) and physical (what symptoms might a patient with this diagnosis have), and then how a diagnosis was determined.

Items that need to be included in your case study are:

  • History and physical (4points)

  • Lab work/diagnostics (3 points)

  • Pathophysiologic diagram with content explaining the pathophysiology of the disease (10 points)

  • Medications (3 points)

  • Effectiveness of treatment (medications or other treatments) (3 points)

  • Other differential (similar) diagnoses (2 points)

  • Reference page in APA format (3 points)

An example of a diagram for how asthma may cause hypoxemia is attached. Note that this is just the diagram, not the entire assignment. Whatever topic you choose, it should go from the basic physiologic abnormalities to the patient’s symptoms. I will be happy to review these before you submit your presentation.

Some of the best topics from last year were:

How does sickle cell anemia result in hypoxemia?

How does COPD cause dyspnea, cough, hypoxemia, and hypercapnea? (you could pick how it causes just one of these)

How does inflammatory bowel disease cause pain?

How does diabetes cause hyperglycemia?

How does Alzheimer’s Disease impair memory?
