Executive Summary

Sa msung cell phone organization should see it fit to adopt benchmarking; this is one of the changes that will improve their sales and also boost their innovation capabilities. First and foremost, benchmarking is a process through which organizations in the same industry compare themselves and also their operations . Benchmarking will enable Samsung compare themselves to their competitors enabling them to use new equipment, increase their profits, reduce cost, improve in processes, and satisfy customers. Samsung should engage in all of the major types of benchmarking, these are financial, performance, strategic, product, and functional benchmarking.

Samsung can also engage in the three benchmarking processes which are external, internal, and competitive . Samsung does not only produce cell phones, but also other electronics such as refrigerator, television, and even computers. It would be appropriate for Samsung to use internal benchmarking since the organization has more than one facility with similar supply chain processes that can be, in turn, compared and contrasted in ways through which processes are carried out in each facility found within the organization . A number of operations can be looked at through internal benchmarking. External benchmarking will enable Samsung at a strategic level to look at their data and compare to that of other organizations in the same industry. The operational performance of Samsung can be compared to that of their competitors through competitive benchmarking. Benchmarking will greatly help Samsung as it will improve the performance of the supply chain through figuring out where necessary improvements are needed. When the performance of supply chain is increased, it can also lead to the increase of profit through the utilization of time in manner that is efficient and also increases value .

Another change Samsung should consider putting in place is changing the shapes or rather the design of their phones of their phones . For instance, when looking at the physical appearance of Samsung S5 and its earlier version from a distance, they seem have the same appearance. This makes it a disadvantage because somebody who had the earlier version would not buy the new version due to the similarity in the design hence will resolve to buying a phone from other manufacturer s. It would be appropriate that when Samsung release new phones, the phones should have their distinctive features especially when it comes to the outward appearan ce, this will encourage their loyal customers to continue buying their products instead of going to buy products from other cell phone organizations ("Advantages and disadvantages of Samsung Galaxy S5 | Technobezz," 2017).

Background

Samsung has been in existence for a long time, it started off as a trading company and it later rose to become one of the biggest cell phone making companies known all over the world. I settled on Samsung because I am one of their consumers. To me, Samsung produces some of the best products around the globe, and the humble story of how it started to where it is right now inspires me. Samsung has a great significance in not only my life, but also the lives of many human beings across the globe. Samsung has made my communication to be easier especially when I am away from the people I wish to communicate with , it has also helped me greatly in my studies as most of my class work requires observations s o I use my phone to take pictures of relevant things to my study in order to have a good visual impression of what I learn in class . I value my Samsung phone because it is worth what it cost me, it has features that are so useful when it comes to day to day activities and it is also easy to be tracked when stolen. Samsung was started by Lee Byung-chull in nineteen thirty-eight; he started it as a trading company located in Taegu, Korea. At the time the company only had forty employees, it was a grocery store that was exporting and trading goods that were produced in the city some of which included vegetables and dried fish. The company grew over the years and expanded to Seoul but left during the war. Lee began a sugar refinery after the war in Busan. The refinery was known as Cheil Jedang, before it expanded to textiles and then the largest mill that deals with wool in Korea. The strategy that led to the growth of Samsung was its diversification that in no time went into the retail business, security and insurance. The major focus of Samsung after the war was on industrialization and also redeveloping the country. In the nineteen sixties, Samsung entered electronics industry. The industry had different divisions that were electronic focused. The divisions included Samsung electro-mechanics, Samsung semi-conductor and Samsung telecommunication, Samsung electronic devices and Samsung corning. The electronics industry started off by producing black and white televisions. In the year 1972, Samsung started selling of washing machines then went to Samsung petrochemicals then to Samsung heavy industries. Samsung started exporting colored televisions in the year nineteen seventy-seven then established Samsung fine chemicals, Samsung construction and Samsung precision company. Before nineteen eighty, four million Samsung black and white televisions had been sold production of microwave ovens in large numbers was underway. ("The History of Samsung Group: South Korean Tech Company", 2017)

Samsung came into telecommunication hardware industry in the year nineteen eighty. Samsung started by building of the telephone switchboards then expanded into fax and telephone system and eventually shifted to the manufacturing of mobile phones. Samsung electronics was put together with the mobile phone business. This led to heavy investment throughout the nineteen eighties in research and development. Samsung electronics then expanded to New York, England, Tokyo, Portugal and Texas during this time. The death of Lee Byung-chull led to the split of Samsung group into four business groups. ("The History of Samsung Group: South Korean Tech Company", 2017)

Samsung has kept on growing up to date as it has continuously come up with new innovations in the mobile phone industry and it always has something new in store for its consumers.

Diagnosis

Samsung needs to change on many issues and implement them this is because it faces very stiff competition from their competitors in the mobile industries. Study shows that Apple’s iPhones are more reliable compared to the Samsung phones. In the year 2016, Apple sold 78.3 million smartphones around the world where as 77.5 million Samsung smart phones were sold the same year. Using this data, it is right to say that most of the world’s population prefers apple phones to Samsung phones. ("IDC: Apple sold more phones than Samsung in Q4 2016 after strong iPhone 7 push", 2017)

Recommended Interventions

For Samsung to realize success or for it to emerge as the best cell phone organization in the world, it would be appropriate for them to consult or benchmark other cell phone organization, for instance there is just something special about iPhone apart from its operating system, there is some special feature about Motorola, there is some special feature about Nokia. Samsung should benchmark these cell phone organizations and find the special features the phones they produce have and then incorporate this features in their innovations. Benchmarking should approximately take the Samsung cellphone organization about one year of which after that the new concepts that are learnt should be implemented immediately. The organization should learn a lot from their number one competitor; that is apple. There are six main reasons as to why apple has remained successful up to date and it would be necessary for Samsung cell phone organization to adopt some of these reasons. These reasons are the people who create apple products use the products first, the products that produced by apple are usually very easy to use and handle and are also simple, apple offers their customers with great services, apple does not keep inventing its products but it makes a better version that is up to date from the previously existing version of a product, for instance apple did not invent mp3 player but instead it reinvented it and made better, apple products are usually two years ahead of the products produced by their competitors. (Bajarin, 2017)

Applicable Organizational Behavior Concepts

The above interventions when implemented by the Samsung cell phone organization will work and in turn make Samsung the best-selling mobile phone all over the world. Benchmarking will greatly influence the sales of Samsung mobile phones in a positive way since the various information and skills acquired will be incorporated into Samsung’s system of handling and making products. Since these information and skills are working for other cell phone organizations, when they are followed and incorporated well they will definitely result to positive outcomes in the company for instance Samsung can emerge to be the best selling mobile phone across the world, defeating its competitor Apple which holds the position as per now.
