Description of the Client System

The client system I have selected is Mr Mike is a military officer. An officer of the military is an individual who is charged with the responsibility of protecting the country against any external or internal threats. He fights as part of an organized land based, sea based and air based armed force. Mike is an army officer. Military officers normally face numerous challenges in their job particularly PTSD which affects many of them.

An explanation of the presenting concern

The presenting concern in this case is that the military officer, Mr Mike has HIV/AIDS and does not know how to tell his family. Mike is a father of 5 and was recently divorced. He has come to the agency to seek help on how to approach his family and explain to them his problem. Approaching the family with such a problem has been a very difficult due to the perception of the family regarding those who have the virus. According to Mike, the family normally believes that those who have AIDS are prostitutes and should therefore be treated unreservedly. This has prompted Mike to come and seek help on the way forward. His desire is to have his family know his condition and also try to change their perception towards HIV/AIDS patients.

A description of the client session scene

In session with my client, I give him the best conducive environment ever. This is initiated with a warm welcome and an open conversation that makes him to be open enough to give ordeal of their problem. At time, I normally encourage my clients to write a description of their ideal session beforehand. There are certain ordeals that clients do not find easy narrating verbally. For such, it is important for them to write them down so I can follow up. Interviewing is the mostly used technique in the session scene with the client. This helps to provide an in-depth description and understanding of the problem for an amicable solution to be unearthed.

Identification of possible practice skills you may use for working with this client system

Social work is a demanding and varied profession which normally requires a practitioner to put on many hats on any given day. This may include being a caretaker, an advisor, a therapist, administrator, a clinician, among others. These diverse roles seem to need almost limitless range of expertise and knowledge. For Mike’s situation, there are various practise skills that I can use. These include empathy which is the ability to be identified with or experience the situation of another person. This means putting myself in the feet of Mike. Another practice skill is active listening and ask pertinent questions (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2014). This enhances the establishment of trust, open doors and discovers important details regarding him to understand the circumstance at hand.

I will also use social perceptiveness where I must be sensitive to body language, social cues, implications and cultural patterns of behaviour. Even though some clients can openly describe their needs and work towards getting a solution in a focused way, several others find it more challenging to verbally express themselves and this calls for the social worker to read between the lines so as to interpret the feelings and thoughts held within (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2014). Another essential practise skill is self-awareness which involves evaluating my own performance and working towards improving on account of the case at hand and future cases. Most essentially is the persuasion skill in which I will advise Mike to be on medication. It is the ability to influence, or coax others to take reasonable actions for a problem at hand.

Draft Script

I first began by welcoming the client (Mr Mike) with a warm greeting and showed him the seat. We then introduced each other. The environment was very conducive for Mike as I could read from his reactions. I placed a smiling face that was welcoming. I then enquired from Mike what brought him to the agency and how I could him. He narrated his ordeal in an easy way even though he seemed to be uneasy. I asked some questions to be clear on what the situation is. I then explained to Mike the services that the agency offers as had been earlier described in this paper. At the same time, I asked about his expectations from the visit and he said that he would wish to be helped with approaching his family to tell them about his HIV/AIDS conditions and also try change their perception regarding the disease. I gave him an assurance that I will help him unite his family together and address the concern with them. I also assured the client that everything discussed here remains undisclosed to anybody else. It remains very confidential (Knee & Folsom, 2012).

Social worker practice skill or behavior

Micro level: Social worker: hello Mike, it is nice to see you, what brings you to the agency today?

Social worker smiles and gestures for Mike to sit down in the empty chair across from the social worker’s desk.

Client meeting

Mike: I have realized that I have contracted HIV/AIDS and I don’t know how to tell my friends and family

Mike slowly pulls back the chair, sits down, and then looks at the floor.

Client feels welcomed

Mezzo level: Social worker: First of all, that is a very sad news but there is something positive, self-acceptance. Accept your conditions and tell them what you are going through.

Mike: but how I can tell them when they have been talking ill of HIV/AIDs patients?

Mike: Mike is now little bit confused whether to tell his family that he has AIDS and the family member don’t know.

Macro level: Social worker: Thank you. First of all, I would advice you to first seek for ARVs to have the impact of the virus reduced. You can live a better life than you imagine. Ensure you take a balanced diet, do regular exercise, and live healthily. All these comes after you have accepted yourself. Having HIV is not a death penalty. Many people have lived for even 40 more years after. You need to approach your family and tell them that you have the disease. You are a father, a leader in your family. You must take action and remain a role model.

Social worker: social worker says to Mike everything will be fine only you should believe on action.

Mike:  Thank you. I am now convinced. I am going to do something. If I must bring a change, it is me to do it.

Mike: Mike smiles and now he is going. He opens the door and says thanks to social worker to feel that he will be fine.

Client feels satisfied and happy. Smiles all the way
