(Recommended) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Conceptual and theoretical bases for nursing practice and research with emphasis on scholarly writing and critique. LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Upon successful completion of this course, th e MSN student will be able to provide a general overview of nursing theory and the application of nursing theory as a framework for professional practice (AACN Essentials I, II, IV, VII, and VIII). a. The student will be able to demonstrate Theoretical kn owledge as the framework for nursing by critiquing and evaluating the concepts, principles, and theories of advanced nursing practice. b. The student will be able to demonstrate understanding of philosophies and the major theories of nursing. c. The student will be able to construct an instructional PowerPoint that articulates the underpinning assumption of a nursing theory as it applies to nursing practice. 2. Upon successful completion of this course, the MSN student will be able to understand the relationship between nursing theories and nursing practice that is evidence -based and guided by the nursing process. d. The student will be able to select theori es and principles to define their roles in interdisciplinary relationships using case studies and virtual presentations. 3. Upon successful completion of this course, the MSN student will be able to integrate theory, evidence, clinical judgment, researc h, and interprofessional perspectives using translational processes to improve practice and associated health outcomes for patient aggregates. e. The student will be able to write a research paper using a theory of choice to analyze implications of nu rsing theory and concepts on advanced nursing practice TEACHING STRATEGIES: This course will use a variety of learning experiences to attain the course objectives, including but not limited to: lecture, online discussion, case study, independent readi ng, assessment strategies, group and or individual exercises, team and individual presentation, and learning games. Specific rubrics for each assignment will also be posted on Blackboard. All assignments must follow APA 6 th edition f ormat. It is highly recommended that students seek the assistance of the Writing Lab as they construct their papers in order to get assistance with structure and APA formatting as is required for all written assignments. All discussion posts will be du e for submi ssion every Tuesday by 11:59pm via Blackboard unless otherwise specified by course instructor. Late discussion posts will not be accepted and will be graded a zero. Written assignments submitted after the due date will be deducted by 10% each day for the first 48hrs. Assignments will not be accepted past 48hrs after the established deadline and will be graded a zero . Any extensions for assignments must be pre -negotiated with the faculty member 48 hours before the due date. More specifically, plagiarism is: The act of incorporating the ideas, words of sentences, paragraphs, or parts thereof without appropriate acknowledgment and representing the product as one's own work; and The act of representing another's intellectual work such as musical composition, com puter program, photographs, painting, drawing, sculpture, or research or the like as one's own. If a student is in doubt about the nature of plagiarism, he/she should discuss the matter with the course instructor. All written assignments submitted via Turn itIn should have limited similarity indexes. Similarity index of greater than 20% is not acceptable and is viewed as an indication of high plagiarism content . Theft - Copying computer programs owned, leased, or rented by the College for use by the student in his or her course of studies is considered theft and will be dealt with according to the laws covering such actions and to the College norms for disciplinary action s. In cases like these, the Campus Dean will convene a Hearing Committee which will hear, investigate and render a report to the Campus Dean. This Committee will be composed of three members from the faculty or staff. According to the findings, the Campus Dean has the choice to make a decision. If this decision is not acceptable to those involved, a petition to the Dean to appoint an Honor Court must be signed by at least three people. The Honor Court procedure is explained in the Student Handbook. CLASS ROOM POLICIES : All students are responsible for reviewing the School Catalog Policies http://www.fnc_edu/publications/Cataloggeneral.pd f Students are expected to logon to Blackboard at least once every 24 hours to ensure that they remain on schedule and aware of assignments or any changes to class scheduling. All assignments are due on the due date and at the specified time, and must all be submitted via Blackboard. All written assignments will be submitted through designated TurnItIn links accessible via Blackboard. All written assignments submitted through TurnItIn will be evaluated using the TurnItIn similarity index to determine if work submitted by students is original and not plagiarized. All work submitted by students must contain no more than 2 0% similarity index, any percentage greater than 20% will be unacceptable and considered as plagiarism . All students are required to access their university email accounts at least twice per week as important information may be shared using this vehicle . In emergency situations such as natural disasters, important information regarding university functions and operations will be communicated via email. Students will be graded on the achievement of the o bjectives, not on the effort put into completing assignments. All online discussions, written assignments and documentation of others' ideas and words in presentations must be in APA 6th edition format . Students have one opportunity to complete each assignment. Papers cannot be rewritten and presentations cannot be re -given in an at tempt to obtain a higher grade. Grading System: Academic Requirements 1. Students are required to obtain a grade of B in all classes, a satisfactory “S” grade in lab, and practicum. 2. C is a failing grade. The minimum GPA at the end of each semester should always be a 3.0. For further information, please see FNU catalog. 3. Students will be allowed to repeat a course only once. Two failing grades will result in termination from the program. 4. There are no righ t or wrong thoughts, feelings or beliefs; these represent your own philosophical beliefs. If your current philosophy includes any particular nursing or other theory(ies), identify these. The final paper is to be typed according to APA format and no more th an 3 pages in length. The paper should include a title page and reference list, however, these pages are not to be included in the final count.

Evaluation criteria are as follows: Criteria for Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper: 1. Introduction identifies purpose of the paper. 5% 2. Organization, documentation, references followed APA format. 10% ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY (20% of final grade) DUE DATE: June 27 th, 2017 The purpose of this two part assignment is for you to describe and critically analyze (describe and evaluate) selected nursing literature related to nursing theory. Each student will write a concise (150 words or less) annotation of THREE (3) ARTICLES about a selected theory. Select a theory from those listed in your assigned textbook. Conduct a literature search for articles that appear in peer reviewed/refereed nursing journals, articles must be published and/or dated within the last five years. Select two (2) research articles and one (1) non -research or theoretical article, from a peer reviewed/refereed nursing journal. SUBMIT THE 3 SELECTED ARTICLES ALONG WITH YOUR ASSIGNMENT ON THE DUE DATE. SCHOLARLY PAPER (30% of fin al grade) DUE DATE: July 25 th, 2017 GUIDELINES: Each STUDENT will hand in one formal paper about a nurse theorist and the theory. The paper is to be a five to six (5 -6) pages total (double -spaced, 12 font, 1 inch margins). Papers submitted longer than 6 pages (excluding references and cover sheet) will not be read. Follow APA guidelines for a cover sheet, headers, pagination, references, etc. Use APA format and label each section using the evaluation outline below. The criteria guidelines below will be used to evaluate your paper. Each paper will graded on a 100 point scale. Groups of 3 students will be assigned. All students are required to participate and be present online during presentations. Each presentation should consist of 10 -12 slides and be 15 -20mins in length. Your presentation needs to include the following: A. Brief background on theorist, learning objectives for presentation, and usefulness of theory in healthcare 4 points B.
