Early Childhood Education

Every mankind should be treated with dignity. Therefore, every human being has a right to belong to social or cultural setup in our community. However, this is not the case when it comes to autistic children because they are disadvantaged in their development life cycle they possess unique abilities . People should not be discriminated with regard to their difference in abilities. Teachers as well as parents of autistic children wish that the children were able to form lasting relationships with other children that are normal as well as participating in other activities that involve children. Teachers need to be well equipped when dealing with autistic children. Teachers should be able to understand autistic children in unique ways since each one has his/her own problem behaviors (Copple, 2010).

Problem Statement

In an attempt of equal treatment to everyone, autistic children are vulnerable members of the community. This is because they are included with other children who are normal in the same classrooms. Autistic children sometimes display problem behaviors and become hostiles to their teachers as well classmates .

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find out the interventions that the teachers can apply so that they can enhance a predictable environment for children living with autism condition .

Review of Literature

Problem behaviors of children with autism are one of the challenging and stressful issues faced by the teachers in classrooms. Some of these problem behaviors are the major barriers to effective social and educational development in these children. Problem behaviors include property destruction, physical aggression, self-injury and tantrums. Concerns based on behavior problems have led to new procedures and standards for student suspension, discipline and expulsion in the amendments to the Individual with Disabilities Education Act in 1997 (NAP, 2001 .

Method

Research Design

The research design which will be used is descriptive design. Through the design, a survey will be carried out by use of the sample of the target population. The target population will be those children with autism and the teachers that interact with them in classrooms. The survey will include the use of questionnaires that will be given to both teachers and children. After the survey, data analysis will be carried to ensure that the data that was collected through the use of questionnaires is valid and reliable. This will be done by editing data to avoid confusion in drawing conclusions from the responses that people give in the questionnaires.

Research Hypothesis

Enhancing a predictable environment to autistic children to reduce their problem behaviors in classroom .

Independent Variable

Classroom environment that is predictable

A predictable environment will assist children living with autism understand what is required of them while in the classroom. This will help children to communicate their needs as well as wants (NAP, 2001 ).

Dependent Variable

Problem behaviors in autistic children

Some of these problem behaviors include physical aggression, property destruction, tantrums and self-injury.

Definition of Key Terms

Autism

Problem behaviors

Participants and Sampling Plan

People expected to take part in the study will be families with autistic children, teachers handling autistic children, and autistic children themselves.

Data Collection Procedures

The data collection procedure will involve the intervals of conditions like seizures, gastrointestinal distress, and sleep disturbance . There will also be data on behavioral treatments used and type of medicines.

Data Analysis

Data analysis will be based on how behavioral treatments and medicines prescribed to autistic children. The analysis will also involve conditions like seizures and sleep disturbance.

Expected Results

The expected results will be enhanced environment that can help in reducing the children’s problem behaviors in classrooms.

Ethical Considerations

Respect for persons

According to Belmont report (1979), there are two ethical convictions that are incorporated in the respect for persons with autism. The first conviction is that people with autism treated as autonomous agents. Secondly, people with autism should be entitled to protection. This protection should come families, teachers, and friends

Beneficence

People should be treated in an ethical way by protecting them from any harm, respecting their decisions and securing their well-being.

Limitations

It is hard to interact with children with autism, this is because they react differently to changes in their environment .

Hi Carzetta,
Thank you for your submission of the Unit 4 Assignment.  Over the past weeks, you have been authoring a research proposal as we covered related material in our readings and learning activities. The Unit 4 Assignment allowed you to present your work thus far, thereby demonstrating how your research proposal is developing. The submission was to be a draft version that includes each of the assigned elements included in the instructions. The sections were to include the Introduction (e.g. presentation of the research problem including a problem and purpose statement), the Literature Review (e.g. a thorough report on at least three articles), and the first half of your Methodology section (e.g. design, hypothesizes, variables, definitions, participants and sampling). Based on the Unit 4 grading rubric, the following represents the manner in which I have appraised your submission.

Introduction - I found that your draft proposal basically defined the research problem that you have identified, establishing a marginal context for its significance and stating briefly the purpose for further investigation. More descriptive detail, including more references to authoritative sources should be included to establish the importance of this proposed study = 7 points

Review of Literature – I feel that the article that you have reviewed offered only a limited depiction of a previous study related to your research problem. More specific detail about the past research effort, including the relevance and how they serve to support your proposed study, needs to be offered = 7 points

Methodology – your submission offered marginal detail on the methods that would frame your planned approach to the research. Information relative to the design, hypotheses, variable and sample should be more thoroughly presented. This is where you should incorporate information from our text to demonstrate you knowledge of these elements…i.e. what is a variable and why is it significant? = 15 points

Writing and Mechanics –There were no grammatical errors in your submission. APA style was not accurately applied to the reference page = 7 points

Total: 36/50 points

I believe that your proposal is off to a good start, but will need to be more refined in order to demonstrate gained knowledge about the material that we have been covering. I look forward to receiving the final version of your effort in Unit 6. If you have any questions regarding this appraisal, or any other aspect of the course project, I do hope that you will contact me for direct assistance.

Best,

Jeff
