1.Why is Cohen worrying about his organization?

Cohen is worried about the ability of C&S wholesale Grocers to meet the increased customers’ demands, high workload and high turn-over while maintaining the highest level of customer satisfaction. He knows that the existing operations are inefficient and he believes, it is appropriate for the company to adopt the concept of self-managed teams in order to enhance organization’s quality, productivity and competiveness. In particular, the dearth of accountability and presence of layers of management in the current operational structure was a hurdle and self -managed teams would eliminate this issues, improve employee’s morale, evaluation and performance. Therefore, Cohen advocates for operational change so as to sustain the growth of the company.

2. What assumptions is Cohen making about organizational effectiveness and operational excellence?

Cohen’s assumptions are based on maintaining high quality standards and financial pressures as the company grows. He also assuming team working is the end result of working together, particularly when individuals are committed to team responsibilities and operations. He assumes increased involvement and recognition of employees would lead to improved operational performance .In fact, if employees have more control over their work, they become satisfied and more productive as they can take pride of their accomplishments


3. i) What are the goals for self-managed teams broadly and at C&S?

Generally, self- managed teams helps achieve organizational goal by ensuring responsibility for outcomes, improving evaluation and monitoring own performance, and implementing of performance strategies to create .solutions. It also helps to meet customers’ needs, enhance employees’ commitment and concentration of energy of tasks and therefore, leads to increased overall performance.

At C&S, self – managed teams would help reduce or eliminate operational inefficiency, employees’ morale issues, and costs as well as improve quality and productivity.

ii)What risks are associated with the transition from the status quo to a team-focused organization?

They is high possibility that transition from the status quo to a team-focused organization would be as seamless as may be required. Also, there is a risk on how the employees and managers would to respond and adapt to such changes or new structure.

4. If you were Cohen and had decided to announce the transition to self-managed teams, what would you say to your employees? Be prepared to make this announcement to the class and outline a strategy for implementation.

Our company will be changing from the existing operational structure to self- managed teams. This new structure which we are adopting would allow every employee to get more involved in their work and have more control over your work environment. More importantly, this move is geared towards helping every employee to attain the overall performance goals while reducing the turn-around time. Also, it helps in creating a safer environment to work.

To developing a detailed self-managed teams structure, it entails the following;

i)orientation of the senior management

ii)getting to decipher more on how team –focused organizations works

iii) developing an organizational architecture and educating those potentially affected .

iv) Creation of self-managed team task force ,from all levels of organization, to help effect this effort

v) Implementation of the transition by deciding on the appropriateness of roles ,assessing organizational systems and providing awareness. Checking appropratness of roles calls for either adding or deleting a role, or even tweaking some the titles of the roles so to better match the organization’s architecture.
