COMM 3001 Applied Interpersonal Communication © 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Media Project Overview ( Student ) In this course, you will be assigned a Media Project th at will comprise a significant portion of your grade. The final deliverable will be an individually written 4- to 6-page report applying theories and concepts presented in the course to the characters and themes in a movie or television show. Although you will write the report on your own, you will work with a small group in Weeks 2, 3 , and 4 to generate ideas for your individual project, which will be due on Day 7 of Week 5. You will be assign ed to a group by Day 2 of Week 2, and your group's movie or television show selection must be submitted to the Instructor for approval by Day 4 of Week 3 . Be sure that you choose movies or television shows that include some sort of tangible conflict within the plot.

Your c hosen movies or television shows must not only be appropriate for the Media Project, but also for sharing with the entire class. The selected media should have an appropriate amount of interpersonal conflict/interaction. Media Project Grading You will receive two grades for the Media Project: a participation grade for the Group Discussions and a grade for the written report . You will receive a single participation grade for your involvement in the Group Discussions in Weeks 2, 3, and 4 . Please reference the Group Discussion Rubric (located in the Course Information area) to see how your participation grade will be assessed. Your grade for the Group Discussions will be entered as the Week 4 Project grade in your My Grades area . In addition, you will receive a grade for the final written report that you will submit in Week 5 . Please reference the Media Project Rubric (located in the Course information area) to see how your final written report grade will be assessed . Group Discussions in Weeks 2, 3 , and 4 Week 2 You suggest and discuss possible movie or television show titles for analysis. Week 3 You and your group select a movie or television show for next week’s Discussion and analysis. You submit your group's s election for approval by Day 4 of Week 3. Note: Selections cannot be duplicated among groups. In the event that groups have chosen the same movie or television show, approval will be granted to one group at the Instructor’s discretion. Week 4 You discus s and evaluate your selected movie or television show with your group, analyzing topics covered in the course. In this 4 - to 6-page report, you will cover the fol lowing points: • Analyze the communication theories, models, and concepts discussed throughout the course in relation to your selected movie or television show. Be sure to address the following: o Self -awareness of the movie or television show ’s characters o Self -presentation and self -disclosure of the movie or television show’s characters o Communication goals and styles of the movie or television show’s characters o Prevalent stereotypes in the movie or television show o The movie or television show ’s conflict and how the characters approached and managed it • Describe your chosen character’s self -presentation style, giving specific examples from the program that demonstrate that style. • Finally, describe how your group interactions have influenced your thought s. Did group members introduce new ideas? Did you change your existing views based on their input? While you should freely discuss the project with other group members, you must write and turn in your own paper.
