Skills Across Media Platforms

Prepare:Understanding the similiarities and differences in the way in which news is reported in differnet media enviroments is one of the keys to becoming a successful writer or editor. While the focus of this course is on honing your skills as writers and editors, it is important that we start by looking at the bigger picture when it comes to understanding skills that a journalist must posses in concert with being good writers and editors. Read “Core Skills for the Future of Journalism (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” by Finberg and Klinger (2014) available in your online classroom. While the report focuses on journalism as a whole, pay particular attention to those areas related specifically to journalists and the profession.

Reflect: Consider the skills that are mentioned for journalists in the article. Choose 3 of the 37 core skills identified in the document that are areas in which you feel you need to improve. How do these areas relate to becoming a good writer and editor? How might these skills positively impact freedom of speech and the ability of the journalist to remain objective and fair in reporting?

Write: After critically thinking about the areas in which you want to improve, write a 250- to 300-word response that discusses the relationship of these areas to writing and editing. In your initial post, you must include at least one in-text citation from the reading material and an additional in-text citation from a scholarly source that you locate in the Ashford University Library or from another credible source. At the end of your post, include your name and a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your post. All citations and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Check it! Your post must be submitted through Grammarly and Turnitin prior to submission.

Respond to Peers:After you have written your initial post, read the posts of your peers and respond to at least two others about the skills they identified for themselves. Your responses should address them by name, be between 100 and 150 words in length, and you must include your name at the end of each response.
