format for information from the course Format:  one Word document.  Students need to provide their name, course, date and instructor at the top left hand side of the paper on the first page.  Following this, students need to pick one font at 12 pts and double-space their answers with no additional spaces between paragraphs. Each answer should be between 2.5 and 3 pages long.   An average completed exam should be between 5-6 pages at a minimum.  Students may go over the required minimum, if it is necessary to fully answer the question.  Points are neither deducted nor added for going over the suggested minimum number of pages.    The main goal is and remains a complete answer.    It is important to understand that grammar, spelling, and mechanics will amount to 1/3 of the grade for this exam.   The remainder of the grade for this assignment is based on content.  Hence, content is important, and how one presents the content is also important.

Citing information:  It is important to cite information from the course text or the “overview” section of each week.  The MLA format should be used for in-text citations and a Works Cited page.  A Works Cited page is separate from the body of the answers provided and should be considered a required supplement to the 5-6 page answer.   Students may use the following weekly overviews and in an in-text citations:   (course overview week 1).   If students are using the course text, naturally the following in text format needs to be used for the course text and page number (Maxfield 22).   If students are using outside materials a proper Works Cited page needs to be included and proper in-text citations must be used.    In addition, credible and collegiate level  sources must be used.   Any general source like the following, but not limited to this list, should not be used:  Wikipedia, Cliffnotes, Sparknotes, etc.   No blog should be ever be used unless the author is a historian and their credentials can be verified.   If students use only the course materials, course text and weekly overviews, only in-text citations for those materials are needed and no Works Cited Page needs to be included.

Please need to include the number of the questions that they are answering

2) Changes began to occur in various areas of the world beginning in the fifth, sixth, and seventh cenuries CE. In many areas of the world these changes would have long lasting significance. Within these centuries Empires would struggle to unify various groups of peoples under one particular empire with varying degrees of success. Beginning in the sixth century CE, how did the Byzantine Empire under the leadership of Justinian manage to embark on a plan of renewed unification? Describe how he planned to keep his people unified through the use of the Roman state. In what ways was he able to unify Romans culturally and politically? His goal was to reunify the Roman Empire, but after years of war, was he able to achieve this goal? Describe how his plans affected each part of the empire, east and west, differently. Aside from conquest, describe at least two ways that Justinian managed to unify the Roman Empire through the power of cultural institutions. Later in the sixth century, China faced similar problems of reunification. China faced internal conflicts that had weakened it and made it vulnerable to the invasions from steppelands. Beginning around 570 CE, a professional soldier became the arbiter of power in the Yellow River valley. Who was this person? How did this soldier turned emperor manage to unite the powers of China? What two things did this new emperor use to unite his empire through appealing to tradition? What major event saw the integration of the Yellow and Yangze river valleys? While his successors would not be able to sustain the structural power they inherited, what new major dynasty would emerge in the early seventh century? Looking at these two examples, describe the similarities that these two powers used to unify their empires using two examples. In the end, did their efforts have a lasting influence on their successors?

3) In the late seventh, eighth, ninth centuries CE, religion was a force that many peoples, even rulers, used to justify their claims to go to war. What three religions served as a unifying force? Generally, in what areas of the world did these religions have major populations? What tools did these religions rely upon to wage wars against the others? Did rulers rely upon religion to unify their cause and justify their actions? How did rulers and elites use religion to consolidate and justify their power? Provide an example of how each religion justified its actions within its “faith”? What other activity is just as important in spreading the teachings of any religion? How did these major religions address the existence of other religious traditions that they confronted? Why did Christianity and Islam gain more converts among the masses after rulers and the elites adopted these religions? Provide an example of a ruler who would adopt Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism and how it affected their politics. In what way were merchants and trade routes instrumental in spreading religious ideas? Provide an example of at least two major religions and how trade aided in the spread of its teachings.
