This learning unit of your text explores how communication shapes the selfconcept and how our self
concept af fects our communication with others. One of the primary focuses is the discussion of self
monitoring. As we study this dimension of communication, ask yourself, "how can I manage my level of
self monitoring to achieve higher levels of goal attainment in a variety of context/relationships?" I also
want you to think about your relationships with your close friends, Facebook friends, family , and even
your coworkers, do you present yourself the same way? W ould you disclose information about your
weekend in the exact manner to your best friend as you would your boss?
In this unit, I want you to spend some time review the idea of selffulfilling prophecies. W as there a time
in your life when some told you that you could do something, and you did it well? Or , was there a time in
your life where someone told you that you couldn't do something so you gave up? Or , was there a time
when someone told you that you could not do something, and you decided to prove them wrong by being
even more successful? The answers to these three questions are results of selffulfilling prophecies.
Selffulfilling prophecies can help shape your selfconcept and influence the way you communicate. If
you understand the benefits and drawbacks of this theory , I want you to consider how you would alter
your way of thinking so that it will increase your chances of success!
I recommend that you begin the unit by taking the quiz before reviewing the chapter material. This
method will help students develop insight into the content that will be covered. Plus, Studies show that
even if questions are answered incorrectly , the correct information can be committed to longterm
memory as long as the correct information is reveal through immediate feedback. And, of course, the
principle works the same if the initial response was correct.
