Budgets

A Comparison of Privately Published Material and Textbook Material.

In studying chapters 23 & 24 you learned about the budgeting process. In this project, you will be required to read the four (4) articles listed below and compare their content and concepts with the information in the chapters covered in class.

  1. Budgeting – Seeing The Future

Excerpted from “Manager’s Toolkit: The 13 Skills Managers Need to Succeed.” Harvard Business School Press, Boston, Mass.

  1. Why Budgeting Fails: One Management System Is Not Enough, by Prof. Peter Horvath and Dr. Ralf Sauter, Harvard Business School Press.

Your typewritten report (one and a half line spacing) must consist of a minimum of 1,500 words and contain the following:

  1. a cover page,

  2. table of contents,

  3. a body

  4. a conclusion or summary page, and a bibliography.

If you desire, you may add additional sources of information and discussion, as long as you cite them (title, author, publisher, pages, etc.).

Instructions:

  1. Compare and contrast the contents of chapters 23 and 24 of the AC-205 textbook with the contents of “Budgeting – Seeing The Future.” Consider, among other things, the types of budgets, their purpose, frequency, results, etc. A table showing the budgets discussed in your textbook with those in the above reports with a description and purpose of each would be helpful.

  1. Thoroughly review “Why Budgeting Fails,” and “No Time for Budgets” and discuss in detail whether or not you agree with the authors’ conclusions. When you work on this part, consider the authors’ comments relative to the different types of budgets they may discuss, and whether or not they include budgets that were not covered in your text.

  1. At the end, provide separate summary paragraphs for each of the two items above and one overall general but personal conclusion regarding budgets in general. Elaborate why you reached this overall conclusion.

Grading will be based on the quality and thoroughness of your review as well as the quality of your writing. If I get the impression that you are simply and to a large degree cutting and pasting, you will lose a significant amount of points.
