Module One Journal

For this module, I selected the Wembley Stadium Project which still stands as one of the most phenomenal undertakings of the 21st century. Construction commenced in 1996, but it soon emerged that the venture would ultimately take up more time than previously predicted. The primary reason why I selected this project was the operational hitches encountered that have mainly blamed for its five-year delay. The project was finally completed in 2006 but remains a prime example of the importance of carrying out proper planning, budgeting, and feasibility tests before embarking on an initiative of such magnitude. Activities stalled when an economic evaluation revealed that the project would cost the British taxpayers twice the amount that had been projected earlier. Some of the glaring miscalculations made were the incorporation of inventive steel arches for aesthetic purposes. It was this lack of historical precedent that emerged as one of the problems that had plagued the project and the corrective measures implemented after assessment that led to its successful completion.

McMahon-Beattie & Yeoman (2005) offer an in-depth look into the plans made to create the Wembley Stadium Project, the conflict that emerged from its failures to implement strategies from the conception stage. It serves as a useful resource, pointing out the mistakes that delayed this multi-million project and the corrective measures that were implemented to ensure that it was completed in time. Through taking us back in time in the operation of design marvels, such as the Coliseum, the authors provide details in the best management practices and what pitfalls that managers should avoid when conducting undertakings of such a magnitude. Potts & Ankrah (2014) offers the reader with a well-researched Wembley Stadium Project as a case study on how project managers can improve the planning strategies and ensure that they do not run out of money mid-project. From the onset, it was apparent that the stakeholders and engineers were ill-prepared regarding the unique arch design implemented by sub-contractors. Findings in this resource are therefore integral to understanding the best budgeting practices in project management.
