The process I want to improve is the HIV epidemic in Indiana. After talking to a representative at the health department asking what was one of the most critical issues that are happening within the community they stated the HIV is one of the most significant problems that the state of Indiana is having and need to address a plan to solve the problem. HIV is a virus that spread through the body fluids that attack your immune system. Usually, the t cells that the disease can damage the cells that the body cannot fight the infection or the disease off. HIV name is Human immunodeficiency virus. HIV does not have a cure now but with medical care HIV can be controlled (CDC, 2017).

HIV continues to be an epidemic in our community according to Indiana Health Department. HIV is on the rise due to the increase of heroin use and dirty needles that are shared among drug users. In smaller counties in the southern part of Indiana, there was such a massive increase that the CDC had to assist with the treatment and intervention as well as the state department of health. In 2015, Governor Mike Pence declared a state of emergency because Indiana had the worst outbreak of HIV in history. The first diagnosis was in December five more diagnosed in January, by February the number was 26 and on March 79 were confirmed infected cases. These cases were in the southern counties of Indiana. The county usually has less than five cases of HIV outbreaks in a year (Goldschmidt, 2015).

To prevent the HIV epidemic, we will need to focus on drug treatment, safe sex, HIV testing and needle disposal. I would like for our community to be able to give out clean needles at any time and have free HIV testing in the southern counties. We would have to organize a team to run a campaign to prevent and educate the community about HIV. To do this, we will need health clinics, doctors, nurses, counselors, and volunteers. Health clinics will be able to give free testing of HIV, also be able to educate individuals on HIV, pass out clean needles and condoms. Doctors and nurses are needed so that when a person is a diagnosis with a positive test that they can get the proper medication, test, and care required to survive with HIV. Counselors will be on staff to help individuals with HIV and family members deal with the shock of the person with HIV. Volunteers will be able to go in the community and pass out pamphlets on HIV and give out clean needles. The flow chart below explains the process of the campaign to prevent HIV(ETU, 2017).
